Dear Parents, Students, and Friends of St Virgil’s College,
Each year, schools are required to prepare an Annual Report on school performance for their parents/carers and the broader community as a requirement of the Schools Assistance Act. I write to advise you that the Annual Report for St Virgil’s is now available on the College website and can be accessed here.
I encourage all members of the College community to take the time to look through this important document. Hard copies will be available from the Front Office upon request. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions in relation to the Annual Report.
Last Friday night, the Parents & Friends Association held their annual Quiz Night at the Austins Ferry Campus in the Callan Centre. With over 100 participants present, it was an entertaining and enjoyable event for all those who attended. Participants were treated to pizzas and beverages on the night, supplied by our Senior Hospitality students who did a remarkable job catering for such a large number of people.
I take this opportunity to thank the Senior School P&F Committee, including Sally Feldmanis, Sandra Hallsworth, Louise Wright, and Maria Bond, for their coordination of this event. I also thank Mr Ivan Dowding-Hopkins, Quiz Master extraordinaire, for hosting the night, along with Mr Aaron Lucas, Mrs Belinda Straatsma, Mr Chris Tsakiris, and Mrs Trudi Baer, as well as the Years 11-12 Hospitality students for providing the catering on the night. Funds raised will support the purchase of resources and programs for students at the College.
Last Thursday night, students from our Junior School experienced ‘One Night of Homelessness,’ providing them with some insights into the conditions many young people in Australia experience on any given night. There are 36,000 homeless young people in Australia, with one in seventy young people aged between 12-25 years sleeping rough every night. With a warm cup of soup, students were exposed to the elements (figuratively speaking), along with input from those who have experienced homelessness firsthand, providing a powerful learning experience. Many thanks to Miss Amelia Duan, Mrs Sue Burrows, Mrs Jo Messer, and Mrs Kim Mooney, supported by a number of parents/carers and Year 10 student leaders, for their organisation and running of this important event.
The Year 12 Formal will be held tonight for the first time in more than thirty years. As a College community, we are excited to celebrate with our young men this significant milestone. We wish them all the very best and trust that this will be a memorable evening and a night they will remember for many years to come.
As this is the last newsletter for Term 2, I wish all our students and families all the best for the upcoming break and safe travels to those heading away.
Best wishes for the week ahead.
Jon Franzin
