Team Leaders Message
What an amazing start to 2024 it has been! We've had the pleasure of welcoming not only new students and staff to our section but also Ollie, our adorable (almost) 3-year-old Groodle. Ollie is lending a paw with Fit For Life and STEAM as he undergoes his Therapy Dog training. It's been heartwarming to witness our new learning community coming together, putting in the effort, and supporting one another.
Creating a sense of belonging within our section has been a priority, and we've had two standout experiences that really fostered this community spirit: our 'Welcome BBQ' and our trip to Port Melbourne Beach Life Saving Club. Both events saw students collaborating, having a blast, and forging connections with each other. And let's not forget the joy of paddling in the ocean during our beach excursion - a definite highlight!
This semester, our focus has been on learning about the rich history, culture, and connection to Country of Australia's First Nations People. We're exploring life before and after European colonization, with activities like the Aboriginal Heritage Walk at the Royal Botanical Garden and a visit to the NGV-Australia's 'Wurrdha Marra' Exhibition, celebrating the art of First Nations artists. Next term, we'll be switching things up, giving every student the chance to experience both excursions.
Fit For Life remains a cornerstone of our curriculum, offering students a variety of activities aimed at promoting physical activity, healthy habits, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. From lacrosse to dance, gym sessions to team games, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
In Literacy, we delved into the powerful themes of Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler's novel, "Black Cockatoo," exploring concepts like standing up for oneself, First People's culture, and the importance of family. Meanwhile, in Maths, our focus was on understanding place value systems and mastering length measurement.
Across the 9/10 section, students have been engaging in a diverse array of STEAM and vocational subjects, preparing them with the skills and knowledge they'll need as they move forward. From Anime Art to Business Administration, there's been something to spark every student's interest.
As we wrap up Term One, we want to extend a big congratulations to all our Secondary 9/10 students for their positive attitude and hard work. Here's to a fantastic continuation of the school year!
Warm regards,
Kylie Weisheit Stef Brearley
