Dear Families,

Harmony Day is coming soon to Sacred Heart on Thursday 21st of March.

This year we are inviting parents/grandparents (with a Working with Children Check) that are available on the day,  to share their culture with our students in a small group. You could work with another parent and teachers will be with you and happy to help. It could be sharing a dance, creating or sharing art, sharing traditional songs or music, cooking - anything that celebrates and shares your culture!

Let Kate know if you can help by next Friday and what you'd like to share and need or if you have any questions - email:kharris@shpreston.catholic.edu.au

You can also have a chat to your child's teacher or Mark. If you would like to share part of your culture but are unavailable on the day - please still let us know!

Thank you to all our families that were able to attend our Welcome Mass and Gathering on Wednesday evening; it was a great way to begin our school year together as a community. Well done to all the new choir members who sang so beautifully and thanks to Onella and Tristan for playing the guitar and ukulele and to all who contributed to make our Mass so special.

Samoa may be a country surrounded by water, but access to clean drinking water is scarce in some areas, with many families facing extreme hardship as a result.

Leaia lives with her five children, husband, brother and sister-in-law on the island of Upolu in Samoa. Not having access to a reliable source of clean water caused Leaia a lot of worry.

Their home is not connected to a piped water system, so they had to rely solely on rainwater collected in old fridges. When their water ran out, Leaia had to walk with her young children to collect water in buckets and containers from a neighbour down the street.

With the support of Caritas Australia's local partner, Caritas Samoa, a water tank was installed at Leaia's home. She and her family now have a steady supply of clean drinking water at home. Next year, they will also have a toilet built, with the support of Caritas Samoa, which will further improve their health and living conditions.

“We are very thankful and grateful for the water tank. It has helped us so much and made our daily life easier,” Leaia said.

Happy International Women's Day - 8th March

Today is International Women's Day - so to all the amazing, strong women and girls in the Sacred Heart community - I wish you a great day!

The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion.

This is from the website: Inspiring others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Collectively, let's forge a more inclusive world for women.

There are some great videos and resources on the International Women's Day website if you'd like to know more or to inspire your children.

Take Care and enjoy the extra long weekend,

Kate Harris
