Welcome back to Term 3!
Students across Years 7–9 have made a strong start to the semester, showing a positive attitude toward their learning and school routines. We’ve seen a noticeable improvement in students arriving on time and wearing the correct uniform, which supports a focused and respectful learning environment.
Thank you to families for your continued support in upholding these expectations. We look forward to building on this great start throughout the term.
Our Year 9 students have begun the term with a strong focus on planning for their futures. As part of their career education, students participated in one-on-one sessions with Morrisby career counsellors, where they explored their strengths, goals, and subject selections. These personalised sessions provided valuable insights into each student’s individual interests and potential pathways.
Through the Respectful Relationships program, students also reflected on their values and responses to the Morrisby survey, deepening their understanding of how personal identity and strengths influence future choices.
To build on this learning, students recently attended the Careers Expo at Homestead Senior Secondary College. This event gave them the opportunity to explore Year 10, 11, and 12 subject options and consider a range of career paths beyond school.
We’re proud of the mature and engaged approach Year 9 students have shown throughout these important learning experiences.
We’ve had a wonderful start to Term 3 as students dive into a new cycle of learning and begin their new electives. In the Art Studio, we’ve taken the time to establish our Essential Agreement, ensuring that all students feel safe, respected, and confident to take creative risks.
To kick off the term, students have revisited the Elements and Principles of Art—foundational knowledge that they’ll draw upon throughout their upcoming unit. We've also explored the IB Learner Profiles, encouraging students to reflect on the type of classroom environment they want to be part of and how they can contribute positively to our creative space.
In the coming weeks, students will be experimenting with a range of new materials and beginning their Unit of Inquiry. We’re excited to see how their ideas develop and their creativity bloom!
Stay tuned for updates on their artistic journeys throughout the term.
This term, Year 7 students have been exploring algebra through group games and hands-on activities and real world problems. They’ve been learning to recognise and use variables in everyday formulas, apply substitution to find unknown values, and understand the associative, commutative, and distributive laws. Students have also simplified expressions using like terms and the four operations, created their own expressions from stories, and built their understanding of key algebraic terms such as expression, equation, coefficient, and variable.
Next, students will manipulate formulas with several variables, before moving into our Space unit, where they’ll classify triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons, and represent 3D objects in 2D using different visual tools.
We’re also excited to host the TalkMoney incursion on August 14 and 21. These free, interactive sessions will help students explore spending, saving, and setting achievable financial goals through real-life money conversations and activities.
This term, Year 8 students have been focusing on the topic of Algebra. So far, they have explored an introduction to Algebra and learned how to classify and solve a variety of equations.
Students have practised writing equations from worded problems, finding equivalent equations, and solving equations algebraically. More recently, they have extended their skills to solving equations with fractions and equations that include pronumerals on both sides.
In the coming weeks, students will continue to build on these skills by learning how to solve equations with brackets and apply their algebra knowledge to real-world problem-solving tasks. It has been fantastic to see students building their confidence and fluency with algebraic concepts, and we look forward to the exciting learning still to come this term.
This term, our Year 9 students have launched into their mathematics learning with a focus on linear equations and graphing. To kick off the unit, students completed a pre-test to help identify their individual zones of proximal development in understanding linear graphs.
The learning began with the basics—identifying coordinates and plotting them on the Cartesian plane. Once confident, students progressed to joining points to form linear graphs. From there, they explored how to interpret these graphs, learning how to identify key features such as the x-intercept and y-intercept.
Next, students will be challenged to sketch graphs using only these intercepts as a guide, strengthening their analytical and problem-solving skills. Looking ahead, the class will delve deeper into the concept of gradients and begin investigating the properties of parallel graphs.
It’s been a promising start to the term, and we’re excited to see our students continue developing their mathematical understanding and confidence.
We are excited to share the very first edition of the Saltwater Magazine, proudly created by our talented Semester 1 Journalism students in Year 7.
Each student has contributed their own unique column, showcasing the writing and creativity they developed throughout last term.
Inside this issue, you’ll find a fantastic mix of topics including cooking tips, upcoming concerts, school fashion, social media trends, and sports. The magazine also features exclusive interviews with members of our school community – Danielle, Katie, Todd, Rex, Tiana (9D), and Vake (7B). A huge thank you to these individuals for generously sharing their time and stories.
We hope you enjoy the read as much as the students enjoyed creating it!
