Year Six

Welcome to Term 3

Our Year 6 students have launched into Term 3 with enthusiasm and curiosity, ready for a term full of exciting opportunities and rich learning experiences. Students kicked things off with an inspiring excursion to IMAX and the Melbourne Museum, an engaging start for all that sparked curiosity and will support students as they begin exploring their chosen Transdisciplinary Themes for our much-anticipated Exhibition later this term.

The energy continues outside the classroom, with many students proudly representing Saltwater at divisional sports and athletics.

With even more to look forward to this term, including Book Week, the Book Fair, and our upcoming Ranch Camp. It’s shaping up to be a vibrant and memorable term!

Netball - Girls Divisional Finals

On Wednesday July 23rd, our Year 6 Girls Netball Team competed at the Divisional Championships, only the second time in Saltwater history that we’ve reached this level!

The girls played with heart, teamwork, and fierce determination, proudly representing Saltwater College. We are incredibly proud of their efforts, finishing the day in an impressive 3rd place!

A massive thank you to Ashley, a parent volunteer for her time each Thursday morning to train the team, and to our fabulous Year 9 Sports Coaching Enrichment students, Tiana and Lilly, for their ongoing support and mentorship.

Soccer - Boys Divisional Finals

A huge congratulations also to our Year 6 boys who represented Saltwater College at the Hobsons Bay Divisional Soccer Finals on Friday July 25th!

The team played three outstanding games, winning them all and securing a place at the Regional Finals on Thursday August 7th.

Their impressive skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship were on full display, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.

Best of luck as you take on the top teams from across the region!

AFL - Girls Divisional Finals

On Monday, July 28th, our AFL Girls team competed in the Division Finals, playing with incredible heart, determination, and team spirit. Although they didn’t walk away with the win, their passion, resilience, and sportsmanship were truly inspiring. Every player gave their all and should be extremely proud of their efforts. You’ve represented Saltwater P-9 College with pride and courage — hold your heads high, girls!

Wakakirri Performance

On the evening of Tuesday July 22nd, our Year 4-6 dance extension students presented their Wakakirri item for judging at the Moonee Ponds Theatre. The Victorian performances were the first to kick off the Wakakirri festival in the country and, with much excitement, we were selected to open the show.

Saltwater can proudly say they opened the 2025 Wakakirri story-telling festival.

Here’s a photo taken from the lighting box of their performance.

Our students performed brilliantly and are a credit to our school. We walked away from the evening with 5 minor awards including-

- Storytelling award for story theme and concept

- Ensemble award for dance performance

- Creative production award for set design

- Production award for projection

- Lead cast award for performance in dancing and acting

We also received the below nominations for further awards in Victoria-

- State award nomination for cultural/social diversity

- State award nomination for health and well-being

Congratulations to all involved and a big thank you to everyone that has helped along the way and on the night.

Notification of whether we are successful in these awards and are invited to perform in the State showcase will come through in a few weeks’ time.

Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Literacy

Students have begun Term 3 by exploring information texts. We’ve been analysing the features of non-fiction texts, including how authors use text structure, diagrams, and images to clearly communicate ideas. Students are learning how to consider purpose and audience when writing, and how to organise their ideas effectively. Through shared reading and mentor texts, we've discussed how strong information reports are planned and structured. Students are now using this knowledge to plan and write their own information texts on topics they are passionate about.

Mathematics

Year 6 students have launched into a unit on fractions this term. We are exploring different types of fractions so that we can accurately describe parts of a whole and make connections to real-world contexts. Students are learning to convert between improper and mixed fractions, understand the relationship between fractions and decimals, and represent fractions on a number line. We are also developing strategies to compare like and unlike fractions and confidently add and subtract them.

Unit of Inquiry

Year 6 students have begun preparing for their upcoming Exhibition by revisiting the key elements of an inquiry unit. We are reflecting on previous units to identify what made them meaningful and how we can apply these elements to our own inquiries. Students are starting to communicate their interests, select Transdisciplinary Themes, and explore topics they are passionate about. They have also begun sharing their Exhibition goals to clarify what they hope to achieve.

IMAX and Melbourne Museum Excursion

To spark curiosity and inspire their upcoming inquiries, Year 6 students visited IMAX and the Melbourne Museum.

This excursion provided a valuable opportunity to explore how exhibits use visuals, information, and interactive elements to engage and inform an audience.

Students viewed a documentary at IMAX and explored a range of exhibits at the museum, observing how information is presented in creative and meaningful ways.

This experience helped students reflect on what makes an exhibit effective, supporting them as they begin designing their own for this term’s Exhibition.
