Year Five

Dear Year 5 Families,
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It has been wonderful to see the students return with enthusiasm and excitement for the term ahead. We have a busy and exciting few weeks planned, including our much-anticipated Year 5 Camp in Week 3!
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been stepping into the role of real-life journalists, writing their very own newspaper articles and reporting on all things newsworthy. They have been learning how to capture facts, use engaging headlines, and write articles that inform and interest their readers. As part of our Unit of Inquiry into migration, we were lucky enough to have some wonderful parent guest speakers visit and share their own migration stories. Students were fascinated to hear about different journeys, experiences, and the reasons people move from one place to another.
Unit of Inquiry
Our central idea, “Migration may be a response to challenges and opportunities”, has sparked thoughtful conversations in the classroom. Under the transdisciplinary theme “Where we are in place and time”, students have been exploring push and pull factors for migration and the many reasons people choose to move. We will continue to inquire into how migration shapes communities and the opportunities it provides.
Students will be completing their interviews with someone at home about their migration stories. These are due back to classroom teachers in Week 4.
Mathematics
In Maths, we have been diving into fractions! Students are developing their understanding of numerators and denominators, learning how to represent fractions as parts of a whole, and exploring how to break these parts up in different ways. Hands-on activities and visual models have helped students deepen their understanding of this important concept.
