ARTS PROGRAM

I am very excited to inform you about this term students are focusing on making a collage using textiles and threads. 

The foundation students will explore the fascinating world of insects, particularly bees and ants, alongside various textile materials. Our lessons will combine storytelling, hands-on activities, and art to make learning engaging.  

Over the next eight weeks, we will explore the fascinating world of insects, particularly bees and ants, alongside various textile materials. Our lessons will combine storytelling, hands-on activities, and art to make learning engaging.  There will be special artwork the students have worked on term two and three.

Week 1 What are bugs? Introduce various bugs, including bees, ants, and butterflies. Students to choose to draw their own insect.

Week 2 Exploring Textiles and colours -Let's make a bee using pipe cleaners 

Week 3 and 4 Students will work into four groups.  To make a queen bee, flowers, a beehive and a honey jar. Together the class can show how bees interact with their environment. 

Week 5 After the bee activities, we’ll explore some literature. We will read ‘The Ant and The Bee’ which beautifully weaves together themes of collaboration and community found in nature. Following the story, we’ll discuss the importance of both ants and bees and create textile art inspired by the book. 

Week 6 to 8 Continue working on our textile book using all sorts of different materials and making lots of ants for our art display.

The students in grades 1 to year 6 will be focusing on textiles and threads and presenting it in a collage art piece, highlighting the integration of Jeannie Baker books within the art project for the school art show.

The students will revolve around the Victorian Visual Arts curriculum, specifically textiles and threads. This subject not only allows students to explore their creativity but also connects them with cultural narratives and the environment. We will investigate various techniques such as fabric manipulation, weaving, and embroidery and other resources sand, leaves, paints, clay and kitchen dry food, spices or broken pasta and cereal. This will be a unique perspective, we will integrate literature by Australian author and illustrator Jeannie Baker, known for her beautifully depicted narratives that celebrate nature and the human connection to the environment.

Jeannie Baker is a remarkable artist whose books combine intricate collages with compelling stories. Her works, such as Grandfather, Grandmother, Hidden Forest, Where the Forest Meets the Sea, Belonging, Mirror and Window, encourage readers to appreciate the world around them. Tonight, we will look at how her stories inspire visual storytelling. We’ll analyse her artistic techniques and discuss how we can adapt them for our own textile projects. 

Our main project will involve students creating their own textile pieces inspired by Jeannie Baker’s works. Over the term, students will follow a structured timeline which is adapted to their year level where they will:

Weeks 1 and 2 Research and Explore: Students will study various textile techniques and choose elements that resonate with them. Students will share their ideas in their teams. They will look at the resources available to them. Look at how Jeannie Baker uses different textiles.

Week 3 Concept Development: They will create sketches and write about their artistic intentions, drawing inspiration from Baker’s themes.

Week 4 to 8 Textile Creation: Using the techniques learned, students will bring their ideas to life, creating fabric collages or woven pieces.

Reflection: Finally, they will present their artwork, their process and the narrative behind their art piece which will be on display to our school community.

Mark your calendars! It is short term, and the Art show will be held in week nine. It’s a wonderful occasion for our students to showcase their hard work to the community. We may need support setting up, so any help would be greatly appreciated. More details on this will follow, but I assure you it will be a memorable experience for all involved.

This is a busy Art term full of new experiences. I cannot wait to start. A few years back I saw Jeannie Bakers art exhibition. I absolutely enjoyed the exhibition. Her art is full of imagination and texture. Last year's art show was fabulous, but I know the students will be doing outstanding artwork this year and they will be proud to display their work for the school community.

I am looking to collect light weight boxes cereal boxes, tissue boxes, dry biscuit boxes, bis light weigh plastic packaging I will have boxes outside my room. No bottles or plastic drink bottles.
