The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter features a report from Yanick (Year 6) about The Titanic. I trust everyone’s enjoy it just as much as I have!

The RMS Titanic

The RMS Titanic had a tragic end killing 2512 people and traumatising the 705 survivors of the disaster forever. On March 31st, 1909, the RMS Titanic began construction on the behemoth of a ship, however 8 people died due to falling, getting crushed and faulty working conditions. It was finally completed on March 31st, 1912.

RMS Titanic was the second ship in the White Star Line's Olympic class ocean liners.

On April 10th, 1912, RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage; the ship was the second fastest ship and the most luxurious ship of its time. Four days later on April 14th 1912 they were sailing the North Atlantic Ocean when 2 people in the crow’s nest yelled, in the shivering cold ICEBERG RIGHT AHEAD! They tried desperately to turn it out of the way but unfortunately at 11:42pm the 269m ship got a 91-meter gash on the starboard side.

Everybody heard the crash and thought nothing of it after all the ship was “unsinkable”, but they made a grave mistake of not getting out earlier. It turns out it flooded 4 of the 16 watertight compartments. The Titanic could only handle 3 and water was rapidly expanding and sinking the ship. People fled to the top of the ship because the bow (the front of the ship) was already under.

The ship started tilting, only women and children were allowed on the lifeboats. A male from 12 years old was considered a man. Many people died and the 702 survivors stayed in the lifeboats until 7:00am in freezing conditions until the R.M.S Carpathia rescued the survivors and made it safely to New York.

This disaster changed the world of ships forever and impacted the safety precautions for hundreds of years to come.
