It certainly has been wonderful to share the various school holidays stories with the children as they outlined where they went and what they got up to, I was amazed to learn how many of the children went to the snow fields. A big congratulations to Krish and Shivaan on receiving the Super Speak Achievement Award.
Krish and Shivaan received the achievement trophy that was presented to students who have completed 2.5 years of Public Speaking & Communication Skills training at Super Speak (equivalent to 100 hours) and presented 10 formal solo speeches. Well done, congratulations and keep it up Krish and Shivaan!
Klarissa (Year 4) loves to keep herself very busy and recently she sent me the following email:
Good evening Mr Catalano,
I just wanted to let you know about my last couple of weeks and share a resilience story with you also.
1. I did my first eucharist, and now looking forward to soon doing training to become an Altar Server. It's a great way to serve my community. Due to different laws, it is hard for us to volunteer much unless it is through perhaps our church or a community group like scouts, girl guides or Australian Air League (in my case).
2. I got a High Distinction for Street Latin dances of Swing and Samba. Now I am learning Mambo and Merengue. As I have only completed half of my Street Latin Bronze Award so far, I got a certificate. You get a trophy after completing 4 dances of that category.
3. I have finished and completed my Star Roller Skating classes. There were 3 levels, but I was good enough to skip a whole level, so actually only completed Star 1 and 3! Thanks to my dancing background as well, I have been asked to join an artistic skating club, where I will be learning to do dancing on skates, and competing in some basic competitions before the end of this year. That will be interesting.Unfortunately I have had a wrist injury during these 3 things, which did not help, but the show had to go on regardless, but I was not doing my absolute best in dance because of it as it hurt when holding hands, spinning etc, yet still managed a high distinction.
4. For Australian Air League (ALL), I finally got to complete my Drill Proficiency Class 3 and received my badge. We only get the opportunity for some of the Drill badges once a year as it requires an adjudicator from headquarters. Jofrit in Year 5 also completed it.
5. A few weeks ago, for AAL, I never got to mention well I kind of forgot as I was excited about my scale model trophy, but I received THREE badges in one hit. Community Service class 6 which means I have completed at least 15 hours of volunteering such as pin selling for the RSL, Anzac Day marching, etc; Aircraft Recognition class 4; and Aviation Experience which I got as I have been in the air on an AAL flying day in the Tiger Moth I mentioned previously, up a traffic control tower, to the police wing, helped at the AAL stand at an careers day at Moorabbin Museum, etc, so these all count towards our experiences badges.
6 - My resilience story.
For Taekwondo I just went up another GUP, I have now been awarded GUP 5, and on Blue Belt 2. At the start of last year I was also Blue Belt 2. In fact, midyear I was awarded Red 1. However I changed Taekwondo centres from the one I was at, which apparently did not do things to the same higher standard as other centres. I never told anyone much before, but when I changed centres late last year, I felt so bad. I knew not so much compared to other Red 1's which I was, at the time. But it was not my fault, I was not taught well.
After discussions with one of the Masters, she and I decided I should drop back about 4 GUPs, a whole year’s equivalent of work, and there I stayed for 2 terms (due to an injury last year it held me back further), before I progressed in the gradings once again. For me this was a real test of resilience, I did think about quitting. But then I decided, even if I don't keep Taekwondo up forever because I get too busy with dance, or artistic skating, cadets and schoolwork/studying (of course!) I at least want to get back to red belt; to say I made it back and this time achieved it properly.
Now I am on track to doing just that, by the end of this year. It feels good to know I am doing it correctly at a better place. It might not be black belt or anything amazing like that, but to me it will be special because of the journey getting back to my red belt. My Uncle watched me at the grading on Friday and last watched me as a blue belt last time over a year ago, and was amazed with my improvement, the difference and style of this centre, as he does not see often at all.
Thanks for reading Mr Catalano!

Good morning Mr. Catalano, teachers, parents and my fellow peers. Everyone did very well and showed respect, initiative and global empathy. Amaya won 2nd place in Under 12 girls I got a gold medal in Under 11 open. My partner in crime Aadyah got a silver medal.
We showed the school values by seeing when our friends got sad and comforted them, respecting our opponents by trying our hardest, and showed initiative by doing our best. Lastly, give a shout out to everyone since everyone tried very hard.
Thank you for listening!
Well done and congratulations everyone!!

Richard was very impressed with the children’s skills and promised to keep practicing so he can be even better next year!
