Learning & Teaching in 5/6G

5/6G Curious Minds In Action

It’s been a busy and exciting start to our term in Year 5/6G! Our class novel “We Are Wolves” by Katrina Nannestad has sparked deep discussions about courage, resilience and, most importantly, curiosity. The young characters in the story show an incredible desire to understand and adapt to their ever changing world during wartime. Their curiosity helps them solve problems, explore new environments, and stay hopeful even in the most difficult circumstances. We have been using the technique of skimming and scanning to get an overview of a chapter before reading and updating any missed details after we read.

In Physical Science, we’ve been investigating light and energy through a range of hands-on experiments. We discovered that light travels in straight lines unless it is blocked or reflected, and we explored how different materials that are transparent, translucent and opaque, affect the way light moves. We also learned about the brilliant inventor Thomas Alva Edison. His story of perseverance and determination reminded us that even failed attempts can lead to great discoveries.

Building on this, we’ve begun researching a scientist of our choice and are working on writing detailed biographies to share their stories. Our curiosity is driving our questions and helping us dig deeper into the lives and achievements of these inspiring people.

We’re especially looking forward to our upcoming excursion to Scienceworks, where we’ll participate in a Design Sprint focused on circuits. This will be a great opportunity to put our teamwork, problem-solving skills, and curiosity to the test as we dive into the world of STEM.

We can’t wait to see what the rest of the term brings!
