Learning Community 3

5/6 Glenys Howard and Leanne Pettigrove

A big welcome to Mrs Leanne Pettigrove, who has joined the 5/6 team!

Hello Everyone, I’m Leanne Pettigrove, and I’m thrilled to be joining Bunyip P.S. as the new Year 5/ 6 teacher for the remainer of this year. I want to start by saying how excited I am to be part of this wonderful school community. I’m passionate about making learning fun and engaging, and I believe that every student has unique strengths and talents. I’m looking forward to continuing getting to know the students in my class and their families, and the wider school community, working together to make this year a fantastic one. If you have any questions or just want to chat, feel free to come and talk to me after school.

Bookweek is always a highlight of the year and enjoyed by everyone, as you can see by our fabulous costumes! Well done to the students who led our parade on Wednesday morning and those who helped with the PBS cross-age group activities. Each day, we listened to a different book from the short listed books, and completed an activity. We created 'birds with arms', our own 'spirit animals' and 'concrete gardens'.  What a great way to celebrate the week!

One of our goals in the writing program this term has been to learn more about sentence structure. Together teachers and students have been learning about nouns, verbs, independant and dependant clauses and simple, compound and complex sentences. We have worked hard to build our knowledge and in the coming weeks will use our own writing to look for evidence of the different types of sentences. Our learning has been rewarding for us all!

This week for writing, we have begun identifying the features of Graphic novels, noting the layout of pages, the use of speech bubbles and how the text and illustrations work together to tell a story.

During Literature Circles, our focus has been on crafting rich questions to guide discussions about our novels and spotlighting something interesting, powerful, funny, puzzling, or important from the text.

Maths last week had students working on converting between decimals, percentages and fractions. This week we have been balancing equations and consolidating our math skills working with multiplication, division, addition and subtraction by solving equations using the Order of Operations.
