Staff at St John's Primary School are commitment to nurturing mathematical excellence in our students through the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) program. This initiative is designed to challenge and extend our students' problem-solving skills, fostering a deeper understanding and love for mathematics.
What is the APSMO Program?
The APSMO is an engaging and rigorous mathematics competition that focuses on developing students' critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. It is not just about finding the right answer, but about understanding the process and strategy behind solving complex problems. The program is aimed at students who show a keen interest in mathematics and are ready to take their skills to the next level.
Why APSMO?
Participation in the APSMO program offers several benefits:
Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills: Students tackle a variety of challenging problems that require creative and analytical thinking, helping them become more confident and capable problem solvers.
Mathematical Enrichment: The problems in the Olympiads are designed to deepen students' understanding of mathematical concepts, encouraging them to explore beyond the standard curriculum.
Confidence Building: Successfully solving challenging problems boosts students’ confidence in their mathematical abilities, preparing them for future academic challenges.
Recognition: Participating students in the Olympiads are recognised for their achievements, both within the school and on a broader platform through receiving participating certificates.
Who Participated?
The APSMO program was open to 60 students in years 3 to 6, particularly those who have demonstrated a strong interest in mathematics. We encouraged students who are eager to challenge themselves and explore the depths of mathematical problem-solving to participate.
Students have participated in 3 competitions so far and their 4th competition will be on the 7th of September. Students have enhanced their mathematical skills, but also develop a resilient and problem-solving mindset that will serve them well in all areas of life.
A big thank you to our dedicated teachers Mr Shane Thompson and Mrs Simone Porthouse for running the Extension Maths classes since the beginning of Term 2. Your hard work and commitment to providing excellent learning to our students is appreciated by St John's community.
