Road Safety around Martin's Gully

As a vulnerable road user, our students are still learning to assess sound direction, vehicle speed, and distance. Their small size makes them less visible to drivers, and they are prone to distractions, often focusing on one thing at a time, making sudden traffic changes challenging for them.

Martin's Gully are doing a Road Safety blitz in PDH lessons this term.

Stage 3 have been focusing on:

* Always wear a helmet when you ride.

* Wait until the bus has gone then cross the road.

Our stage 3 students have been making their own posters and videos to promote their campaign.

Parents and carers are responsible for their child's safety on the way to and from school. We are reminding students and parents that informal bus stops are an essential part of bus travel, particularly in rural and regional areas.  They are often temporary, not sign posted and sometimes at the end of driveways.

Be extra cautious when driving in these areas.  Always slow down when you see the flashing lights on the bus and look out for children.  Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Did you know children are most at risk in the minutes after they get off the bus?

Thank you for looking out for our kids and slowing down to 40km/h when the lights on buses are flashing.

Teach your children to be safe riders by always:

  • wearing a correctly fitted helmet
  • using a well-maintained bike or scooter
  • walking your bikes across pedestrian crossings
  • riding to and from school together
