Hello Level 3 Families,

Book Week

We had such a fun day yesterday celebrating Book Week. The creativity of the costumes was fabulous and the parade was as action-packed as always, especially when the Big Bad Wolf got chased through the stadium by the Woodcutter!

What can you do at home?

Spelling: Please see below for 2 weeks of Spelling words. We are focusing on the long /a/ sound and the spelling choices that match.

As always, you will find some fabulous maths games at https://www.lovemaths.me/operations-36

Literacy - Writing

Students have continued to explore Information Reports about animals this week. We have analysed examples, discussed the importance of using technical vocabulary related to the topic, and how to add more detail and description into our writing. We are also focusing on structure and paragraphing. This structure is an example of how we would organise an information report about an animal.

Literacy - Reading

In reading, students are exploring information texts about cultural celebrations around the world, which is linked to this term's Inquiry / ERP unit of work. They have been exploring new vocabulary and using questioning and summarising to ensure they understand the main points. Students also participate in choral and partner reading to practise reading fluency.

Maths

In maths, we’ve been having fun learning about telling the time and connecting our fraction knowledge with reading an analogue clock to gain a deeper understanding of the measurement of time.

During WIN time we have been practising making fractions, symmetrical shapes, times tables and addition and subtraction. Students have been building their agency into WIN time to feel empowered with their learning goals. They get to set a goal, track their behaviour through the Zones of Regulation and have a choice of the skills to practise and the materials to use.

As part of a professional development project that Miss Parson's is participating in, students in 3A have been learning about the elements of an agentic learner. The first 3 elements are: having courage, being reflective and having discussions.

Inquiry / ERP

We have been learning about the many religious and cultural festivals and holidays celebrated around the world. One of our favourites so far is Holi - the Hindu festival of colour. Students have been transported into many different cultures to understand the meaning behind these celebrations. At the end of the term, they will be showcasing their knowledge of a chosen festival and it's country of origin.

Science

This week in Science, students explored the distance of the sun from earth. Wilko modelled that if the earth was a tennis ball (in the red circle in the photo below) and the moon was a marble then how big was the sun? The students made a circle the size of the sun if the earth was the size of a tennis ball.

We then went outside to find the distance between the Earth and sun (if they were the tennis ball and the student circle). We were so surprised! We started at the circular drive (near the Principal carpark) and walked up Holloway Rd. We walked all the way to Brixton Rd - just over 700m. It is quite the distance! Thank you Wilko and Safety Sue for such an engaging lesson. We are never going to forget that we walked the distance between the Earth and the sun and our minds will continue to be blown by the sheer scale of our solar system.

Wishing you a fabulous fortnight ahead,
