Book Week

On Thursday August 22nd we celebrated Book Week with a fabulous parade showcasing creativity and flair across the level. It was wonderful to see the effort everyone went to.

Literacy

Reading Fluency

In literacy we have been working on our Reading Fluency. As part of this process the students record their reading at the start of a reading practice unit and then again at the end. These recordings are stored online and can be accessed by the class teacher to help with assessments and goal setting. The students listen back to own reading and then set goals in their reading fluency. These include, pace, smoothness and volume variation. After working on these goals for 2 weeks they record themselves again and make their own assessment of their improvements.

Subplots & Informational Texts

Last week we completed our study on sub-plots and how to build these into stories. To allow all focus to be on the subplot, we based our stories around fairytales and fables, with some modifications. This week we started a new topic based on a "mentor text". We are using "Iceberg" by Claire Saxby. As well as using this text to assist with reading, we will also use it as a basis for working on "informational texts".

Maths

Students this 2-week learning cycle, helped students develop insightful and specific ways to gather statistical data to create different data displays. They surveyed, observed and designed both categorical and numerical data tables. Students have refined their ruling and graphing, designing graphs with and without technology.

Wellbeing

With everything being a major issue with relationships and events and playground times, we have worked on our students putting many of these things into a manageble context. We all created a "Catastrophe Scale". By doing this the children were able to recognise the true significance of many of their (non) major events. We just hope these get committed to long term memory now! But we will continue to work on these.

Kitchen / Garden

Level 5 students were back in the Kitchen and Garden these last couple of weeks. In the Garden, students began planting vegetables and floral tokens. This was a wonderful follow-on activity that saw the flow from preparing the garden beds for new seeds, to planting these seeds ready to grow.

In the Kitchen, 'Rice Paper Rolls' were on the menu. Students sliced, diced and rolled their delicious snacks, some students going back for 2nds, 3rds and 4ths. It is amazing to see Mr Marco include both vegetarian and meat options for students to choose from each week. Pictures of the Kitchen below:
