Community Languages Chinese

Ms Yingna Ke and Ms Jane Zhou

Week 3 was a super exciting week at SSPS!  Welcomed 12 international students from China for immersive study with our Stage 3 classes and SSPS Chinese students. Selected Chinese speaking students had an international buddy to accompany and learn with them throughout the week in classes (as well as in Chinese language lessons) and in break times. We had a welcoming greeting and a farewell ceremony for the international student visitor as well as exchanged cultural gifts on behalf of the school.

Both the buddies, our stage 3 students and international students found the experience deeply enriching and inspiring with lots of communication to exchange cultural knowledge and insights with. The international students also supported their buddy in Chinese learning and writing during language lessons with partnership on completing class activities, allowing them to share skills and strengths with each other.

An overview of term 3:

Stage 1 students have started the topic, ‘School’. They have been taught vocabulary on areas and facilities in the school in Chinese, as well as going onto the playground to locate different areas and say them in Chinese with their Chinese Teacher.

Stage 2 students have started the topic, ‘Seasons and Weather’. They have learnt the four seasons in Chinese as well as vocabulary and sentences for expressing different seasonal clothing.

Stage 3 students have started the topic, ‘My Dream Home’. They have learnt about the features of a traditional Chinese home and compared them to modern Australian homes. We have also learnt about current Chinese housing trends and vocabulary of rooms in a house.
