Community Languages Korean

Ms Sara You and Mrs Sidney Park

At the end of last term, Stage 1 and 2 students completed their unit of Food and Food Etiquette respectively with a Korean Gimbap cooking lesson. The students had a memorable time making their own Gimbap. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who came to help out!

This term Early Stage 1 students have been learning about pets in Korean. They have also been revising the first five consonants in Hangul (Korean writing system). Students are also learning a song about a baby pig in Korean.

Stage 1 students have started the topic, ‘School’. They have been taught vocabulary on facilities in the school in Korean and doing crafts to support their learning.

Stage 2 students have started the topic, ‘Seasons and Weather’. They have learnt the four seasons in Korean with actions. They have been learning adjectives in Korean to describe the weather.

Stage 3 students have started the topic, ‘My Dream Home’. They have learnt about the features of traditional Korean homes and compared them to traditional indigenous Australian homes. We have also learnt about current Korean housing trends and vocabulary of rooms of a house.

The Joint Program students have written postcards to send to Korea and we have received a lot of Australian snacks to send over to Gomyung Elementary School. We thank students and families for their generous contributions.

Korean Immersion Day Excursion

Our year 6 students who attend Korean community language classes went on an excursion to the Latvian House in Strathfield and had the best day.

The Korean Cultural Centre in Sydney prepared an immersive and exciting learning experience for our students. We enjoyed fresh fruit and some tasty Korean snacks for morning tea. Students learnt a K-pop dance by a professional dance group, crafted a mini broom, and showed off their competitive side by playing traditional Korean games.

We also enjoyed a cultural performance by Namwon National Gugak Centre who travelled all the way from Korea! The traditional instruments that some of our students got to play were called Haegeum, Gayageum, Geomungo, and Ajaeng.

Thank you Ms You and Ms park for organising this wonderful experience
