Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly
Week 6, Term 3
In Week 6 we are learning about...
📚 ENGLISH
In Reading, we will be looking at some of the shortlisted books to celebrate 'Book Week'. Students will be choosing their own favourite and thinking deeply about the language and the message created by the author. Students will practice reading it during the week and finish the week by reading their favourite text to a reading buddy.
In Writing, we will record our opinions and try to persuade the audience. Students will write reasons to help convince others that their favourite Book Week text is the best!
In Phonics, we will continue our focus on saying and hearing sounds in words to assist us with spelling. In Grade 1 students will continue to review long vowel sound patterns. In Grade 2 students will focus on the vowel combinations that make the sounds /ar/ and /er/
What you can do at home
Ask your child to segment longer words that they find when reading with you at home. Resist telling them unfamiliar words as soon as they pause, instead you could ask them to 'break the longer word into segments' to help. Your child may start to notice base words with added suffixes (endings) when doing this. Being familiar with word parts is another strategy that students can use to help them build fluency.
🎲 NUMERACY
We will continue with our focus on multiplication and division (grouping and sharing). We will consider how grouping is a representation of skip counting and repeated addition and that groups can also be presented in an array formation, showing items in rows and columns. These concepts are the foundations to develop before times tables are presented in Grade 3.
This week we will also continue measuring. Our tasks will be related to the concepts weight, mass and capacity.
What you can do at home:
The kitchen is a mathematical tool shop when exploring measurement! Have a look through your cupboards and draws with your child to help them find the tools the we use to measure while we are cooking.
If you have a spare afternoon, bake a special treat with your child. The conversations you can have about weight, mass and capacity will flow naturally. Talk about the tools you are using and notice the weight measurements in the recipe and on the ingredient packaging.
Finally, enjoy the moment when you get to sit together and taste the delicious treat you have created!
🌄 CBL - Respect
This week will be considering the following question; How do we show respect for others? We will focus on good sportsmanship, considering the question, 'What is fair play?' We will discuss the importance of being a respectful competitor wether you are the winner of the loser in a game.
This term, our CBL work links directly to the 'Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships' program and we are completing many of the related topics during the term.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Please help your child to remember to pack their take home book pocket and iPad into their school bags every day. Not only are these items important learning tools, but remembering this daily process also helps your child build good habits for life. When they remember to bring the tools we need each day they show organisation, commitment and connection to their learning - positive character strengths for your child to show.
Our Gymnastics program concludes this Thursday with Session #5. Thank you to all volunteers that have helped to support the smooth running of this program, we are grateful that you have shared your time with us.
Our Book Fair will be held from the 2nd - 6th September and we would love some parent helpers to run it. If you have previous experience, or would like to learn, we would be grateful if you would consider helping this year. Please reach out to Julie Barnden if you are interested.
At this time of year, we start to run low on supplies of tissues and wipes. If you are willing to donate a box of tissues or a packet of wipes to your child's classroom, we would be very grateful for your kind offering!
