Around our level
On Friday, August 9th, the school celebrated Yarra Road Olympics Day. Leading up to the event, each class selected a country to represent and decorated their classroom with that country’s colors and information. The day began with a ceremony in the gym, organized by Mrs. Haysom. The students in 5/6A performed a song and dance to ‘Party in the USA’, 5/6B danced to ‘To Brazil’, and 5/6C danced to ‘Grease is the Word’. Since the Olympics originated in Greece, representatives from 5/6C also performed the Zorba dance. The house captains carried the torch to the tune of ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and presented it to Mr. Darby, who symbolically lit the cauldron. Following this, the Year 6 captains released paper doves as a symbol of peace, while performing movements to, ‘I Believe I Can Fly’. A group of girls sang the ‘Yarra Road’ song, and finally, a group of students ran a race in slow motion to the music of ‘Chariots of Fire’. After recess, the Year 5 and 6 students joined their buddies and headed to the oval, where seventeen activities were set up for the students to enjoy in their Mateship groups. In the afternoon, the students had the opportunity to visit all the decorated classrooms, and they carried their passports as they explored each room. I thoroughly enjoy organizing these events, with the support of the captains. It is always wonderful to see the entire school participating in the activities, both in the gym and on the oval.
Our comments and photos are from this day. You will have to wait for the next newsletter to hear about Book Week.

My highlight was watching the dances and my favourite performance was the race that Greece did. It was very funny and cool.

What a day it was! It was so much fun!
I liked the assembly because we got to see every class representing different countries. I especially liked Japan because little Mai in Year 1 spoke some Japanese at the front! I think everyone's jaws were on the floor. It was very impressive. I also like our "Party in the USA" dance. It was super fun singing and dancing to that. Also all the captains did a funny little dance to ‘I believe i can fly" and it was funny to do with the paper doves. The house captains also did the relay for the torch. I loved doing the mini olympics because Liah and I got to run our mateship group through the activities. Our mateship group did really well!

I really liked making the folder that had all of our American work in it, and going around and seeing all the decorations in the other classes.

I really enjoyed Yarra Road Games Day! We started off with an opening ceremony. We watched all the classes parade around the gym. Our class learnt about Brazil, so we dressed up in their colours of yellow, green and blue. After snack, we got into our Mateship groups and went down to the oval where we had our own Olympic Games! After lunch we went around the school to look at other classrooms and their countries. Overall, it was a great day!

My favourite part of the day was the parade because all classes did a lap of the gym dressed in their country’s colours. While everyone walked around, a song from their country was played over the speakers. I also liked playing all the activities on the oval for our Yarra Road Games.

My highlights of the Yarra Road Games Day was firstly the opening ceremony and parade that was held in the gym. My second highlight was going around to all the classrooms seeing the country decorations. The sports activities on the oval were also really good. We moved between activities in our Mateship group with our buddies. The best activity was the long jump.

My highlight of the Yarra Road Games was the opening ceremony. I loved listening to all the different songs from all the countries. The whole day was amazing but the opening ceremony really stood out to me because it was cool seeing the country colours of the different classes and listening to the music from all over the world!

My highlight of Olympics Day was dressing up in the Greece colours, especially because I have heaps of blue and white stuff. I also loved the Greek dance, Zorba, which we performed to the whole school. The Yarra Road Games were fun too. The hot chocolate and croissants were divine. Overall, the Olympics Day was a 10/10. I would definitely do this again.

I enjoyed the games, and I think the opening ceremony was my favourite. With all the countries in the gym and the Chariots of Fire, I found that quite fun. Walking around the classes was also fun. I got to dive into new countries with lots of things to learn. Each country had its own story, and it was quite interesting seeing what people were wearing and what everyone had learnt. Overall, it was a very interesting and fun day.

My favourite part was the opening ceremony, it was just as good as the real one. On the oval there were so many activities that were in the actual Olympics. It was all really fun, especially soccer and basketball. And at the end of the day, we went to each country (classrooms) and learned facts about those countries, ours (Greece ) was obviously the best.

My highlight was the parade. I liked all the different music and colours. My favourite country was Greece, obviously. White and blue are the best colour combinations. My class walked two laps around to Grease is the word. My class also did the Zorba which is a dance that does the same steps but becomes really fast.

My highlight of the Yarra Road Olympic Games was watching everyone doing the parade and having a song that represents that country. Greece was obviously the best country, and Greece had the best decorated room. I loved representing Greece and loved how Mrs Haysom was so into it and really wanted Greece to be the best.
