Year 3 & 4
Around our level
This semester, our enthusiastic Year 3/4 students are diving into what it means to be active, responsible members of our community. As part of their exploration, they’re taking a hands-on approach to environmental management by participating in our can and bottle collection drive for a 10-cent refund!
Here’s how it works: Each class has a green bucket designated for collecting eligible cans and bottles. Every Friday, the Year 3/4 students sort and prepare these recyclables for processing.
Did you know that Victorians use over 3 billion drink containers each year? By recycling, we’re not just cleaning up our environment—we’re also making a tangible impact.
But there’s more to this project than just recycling. The students have discussed how to use the money collected through the 10-cent refund scheme to support various community groups. They’ve explored three key areas for potential support:
We’ve encouraged the students to think about which community groups resonate with them and why. Their ideas will guide how we allocate the funds and contribute to the well-being of our community and beyond.
What community group are you interested in helping?
Animals, The Melbourne animal shelter

To help animals that live on the streets and live in shelters. - Sadie M 3/4A
What community group are you interested in helping?
AMRRIC (Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities)
Why is it important to help this community? Because the dogs and cats get new owners. To get their food. To help dogs and cats get cleaned and washed so they find new homes. - Aaron L and Raghav S 3/4B
What community group are you interested in helping?
RSPCA and Animal Aid
Why is it important to help this community?
Because animals need homes. They have no food or water. Cats and dogs are wandering with possible diseases that they can’t get help from. - Maci R, Emily S and Isla A 3/4C
What community group are you interested in helping?
Sports Clubs
Why is it important to help this community?
More people can play in different clubs instead of 20 people in one club. People or the head of the club can afford new equipment. Kids with disabilities can have their own sport game. Afford expensive equipment and not break. So more kids can afford to play sports. - Jordan V and Harry B 3/4B
What community group are you interested in helping?
Caring for people
Why is it important to help this community?
We want to help injured people from the Army. - Eddie S and Archer A 3/4A
What community group are you interested in helping?
Peter Mac Foundation
Why is it important to help this community?
Because we have both lost family members to cancer. A lot of people suffer from cancer. - Cruze F and Noah F 3/4C
What community group are you interested in helping?
The environment. Cleaning plastic and litter on the road and the sea.
Why is it important to help this community?
Because people are caring less and less about plastic in the ocean and on the road, so we need to donate money to companies who clean up litter. - Jye C and Toby M 3/4A
What community group are you interested in helping?
Nature/Wildlife. We can help by planting more trees.
Why is it important to help this community?
Because if we have more trees we have oxygen and then animals can have more homes. We need them everywhere and also in our Sanctuary so we can have more bases. - Vodhini C and Parkah H 3/4C
What community group are you interested in helping?
The Environment.
Why is it important to help this community?
If you help the environment you can help animals and people. The sanctuary used to be all bush but trees and nature are dying because of us! - Xander H and Victoria C 3/4C
We’re proud of our students’ commitment to making a difference and look forward to sharing the results of their efforts.
Book Week
This week we have been celebrating all things reading. Starting off with our annual Book Week Dress Up. It was so amazing to see so many different books represented by our students.
On Tuesday, the 3/4s delved into a delicious book tasting. Our classrooms were transformed into a cafe and students got to taste different genres of books. Students nibbled away at books that focussed on fantasy, poetry, books with suspense and adventure.
Levi B:
I liked all the different costumes, reading lots of different books during the ‘Book Tasting’ and reading with the Bright Horizons Kinder kids while they were visiting.
Shakira I:
I loved being able to see everyone else’ costumes and reading new books.
Annabelle H:
For book week I dressed up as Red Riding Hood. I really enjoyed walking in the parade.
Students are nominated by their teachers to receive a certificate of acknowledgment. The below student's certificates will be presented at our next assembly.
