Around Our Level
On Friday 9th of August, we celebrated Olympics Day at Yarra Road. Our Prep students came to school dressed in a sea of green and gold and performed ‘Home Amongst the Gum Trees’ at our special opening ceremony. After recess they participated in tabloid events on the oval in their Mateship groups with their Year 5 Buddies.
Last Thursday, our Parents Association organised our inaugural ‘Big Day Disco’ at school. Our students came to school dressed in their disco outfits and danced away in the gym with the Grade 1’s and 2’s. The canteen provided special lunch packs on the day for our students which was a real treat.
On Monday, we had a special Book Week parade in the gym. Each class walked around the gym and showcased their costumes/outfits. The theme for Book Week this year is ‘Reading is Magic'. As part of Book Week celebrations, our Prep students have undertaken ‘Book Tasting’ activities in their classrooms. Tables were set up with a variety of books including fiction, picture story, nonfiction, magazines and newspapers. We discussed the different types of genres and talked about what we might find in each of the different types of books. We learned about nonfiction texts and their special features which include a contents page, glossary and index.
In Literacy, we have been learning about the sounds v, y and z. This week we are revising short ‘a’ and nasalized ‘a’ in our weekly UFLI lessons. We have been revisiting our sight words and heart words and undertaking Guided Reading sessions with a small group focus.
In Maths, we have been learning about capacity (how much something holds) and mass (how much something weighs). We used classroom items, like rice and unifix, to measure the capacity of our shoe. We used balance pans to work out if items in our classroom were heavy or light. We introduced maths vocabulary such as full, half, empty, half full, half empty, balanced, equal, heavy and light. This week we are also revising numbers to 20 and our focus has been on oral counting from any given starting point.
In Wellbeing, we have been learning about ‘Help Seeking’. We brainstormed ideas about what makes a good friend and how we can be a good friend to others in the classroom and in the yard. We discussed a number of role play scenarios and how we can help others.
In Geography, we have been learning about aspects of Australia, such as the different states and territories and important landmarks, such as the Sydney Opera House, Uluru, and The Great Barrier Reef.
This Friday, will be the last day for our student teacher Mr McDowell, who has been working in Prep A and planning learning sequences in Maths for both Prep classes. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his valuable contribution whilst at Yarra Road Primary School and we wish him all the very best with his future teaching career.
