Education in Faith
R.E. Learning in 3/4JW
Our rich concept this term is IMPACT. This week students have explored what is meant by ‘Our Common Home’ and how we as a church community and as individuals, are called to care for it and all those who live on it. Students have discussed the fact that they have the capacity to make choices about the way they live and that these choices have an impact on their lives and the world around them.
Students worked together to write a definition of what they thought 'Common Home' meant. They believe it is the world that we share with everyone.
Students watched the Laudato Si'animation and were asked to identify some of the negative effects humans have had on the environment. They then thought about thee three questions:
Why might this issue matter to me?
Why might this issue matter to people around me?
Why might this issue matter to the world?
Taking more than our fair share:
Chloe: Others might struggle to get food, water or clothes for their families.
Cutting down trees:
Archer: Cutting down trees reduces oxygen production.
Alexander: less oxygen ca cause head aches and medical issues.
Rosey: because we are destroying animals environments and they might die.
Keilah: Trees are important for the world.
Edward: It would be hard to breathe because trees supply oxygen.
Luke: Lots of people like to play in nature.
Connor: We can't breathe without trees.
Otis: People won't be able to enjoy the beautiful forests.
Emily H: People are cutting down animal's habitats so we need to help them get trees to live in.
Griffin: It takes animal's homes away.
Dan: I might not be able to breathe as well.
Sophie: Cutting down trees affects the world because people will get sick due to the air becoming dirty.
Aksel: Eventually the amount of humans will be reduced.
Tristan: With no oxygen people will have to use oxygen masks.
Oliver: It will cause the world to die.
Tully: Don't cut down trees because we need them to be able to breathe fresh air.
Tiana: People will get less and less oxygen!
Will: We won't have any wood if we don't keep planting more trees.
Emily N: If you cut down trees, animals won't have homes.
Pollution:
Noah: People can get sick from the fumes from cars.
Isaac: Pollution affects the world because it causes global warming and it's melting the ice which is effecting polar bears.
Hailey: It can hurt the earth and turn it into a rubbish land.
Leo: It matters to others because it will make trees and plants die.
Alessia: Pollution affects others around me because it makes people become sick from gases and chemicals.
Sunday Gospel
The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
After hearing his doctrine many of the followers of Jesus said, ‘This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?’ Jesus was aware that his followers were complaining about it and said, ‘Does this upset you? What if you should see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before?
‘It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
‘But there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the outset those who did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. He went on, ‘This is why I told you that no one could come to me unless the Father allows him.’ After this, many of his disciples left him and stopped going with him.
Then Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘What about you, do you want to go away too?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the Holy One of God.’
Discussion Questions
1. What are the important things that you have to do each day?
2. Why do you do them?
3. Which are the hardest for you to do?
4. Why do you keep doing them?
5. In today’s Gospel some people could not believe Jesus. What did these people do?
Following Jesus is not always easy but our faith gives us strength. We pray that we will choose to follow Jesus in all we say and do this week.
