VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE

The Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge has begun and the students at Rowville Primary School are excited to be taking part. Every student will participate in this year’s Reading Challenge. The Reading Challenge encourages students to be actively involved in their reading. It is not a competition, but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by September 2024. Students talk about the books they read with friends and family and they push themselves to read as many books as they can.

Students in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 will be sharing 30 books with their classroom teachers. Students in Years 3 to 6 are challenged to read 15 books. Everyone who meets the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement.

More information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge can be found at https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge

Let’s all embrace the power and joy of reading.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY WEEK

This week is Cultural Diversity Week (Monday 18th March to Sunday 24th March). The theme is ‘Our Shared Stories – Celebrating Together.  Cultural Diversity week encourages all of us to come together to respect our cultural backgrounds and experiences and to celebrate the diverse multicultural communities in which we live. I love to learn about other cultures and sharing stories is a great way to celebrate the week.

WORLD STORYTELLING DAY

On the 20th March every year we also celebrate World Storytelling Day. This special day was established so that everyone would acknowledge the art form of storytelling as well as to encourage diversity among different cultures. Everyone has a story within them. Everyone can communicate their stories in ways that enable us to connect to the wider world around us. Storytelling links us to others. We can learn from them, we can retell them, we can listen and understand others emotions and feelings, we can show empathy, outrage, or surprise. Storytelling allows us to dream, imagine and wonder about things. Stories can grow and connect, and they can make us laugh or cry. They can build bridges to success, harmony and peace. Take the time to share your stories with your families and friends. You never know where the story will take you.

HOLIDAY READING

Easter is nearly upon us and we have a lot of good Easter picture books to share such as There Was An Old Bloke Who Swallowed a Bunny by P. Crumble, Fair Dinkum Aussie Easter, Bilby’s Secret, Bilby Moon, The Smallest Bilby and The Easter Games, We’re Going on an Egg Hunt by Laine Mitchelland This Is Not an Egg by Philip Bunting.

The list is extensive and varied however I’ve really enjoyed the new Bad Bunny series of books by Johnathan Bentley. Bad Bunny is unexpectedly good in bad situations! He is outrageous and brave and mischievous but he always saves the day. I love the illustrations they bought a knowing smile to my face and the rhyming text is lots of fun… “Four little bunnies popping up to say, “Hello!’ Three of them are quite polite, but one is…”   well you’ll just have to read the stories to find out!

If anyone would like to borrow books for the holidays the 21st Century Learning Space is open every day at lunchtime and after school until 3.30pm.

Enjoy the Easter school holidays and keep reading everyone!
