Reading and Viewing

This term we will continue to work in the whole class, shared and small focus reading groups.  The students will use a variety of texts and Fountas and Pinnell leveled texts to work on comprehension strategies about, within and beyond the text.  They will be reading texts with a particular foci that navigates understanding  of non fiction texts related to the Inquiry unit on Living Things.

Writing

This term students will focus on writing to explain/inform.  They will create annotated diagrams in support of the literacy component of our science unit.  For each text type we will look at the different structures and language features specific to the text type.

Speaking and Listening

The students will be given opportunities to listen and contribute to conversations and discussions to share information and ideas. Students will be required to be  active listeners and respectful speakers when working in small groups.

In collaborative groups students will also plan and deliver short presentations on given topics. This will culminate in their Celebration of Learning as they deliver their learning achievements to other students and our school community.

Mathematics

Number and Algebra

This term we will be focussing on addition and subtraction.  We will develop efficient mental and written strategies and use appropriate digital technologies for addition and subtraction where there is no remainder.  This concept will extend to trading and regrouping for mathematical equations.  They will focus on Multiplication and Division beginning with an emphasis on simple strategies to represent an understanding and the relationship between these 2 mathematical concepts.  The students will continue to develop a range of mental and written strategies to solve problems as the term proceeds.

Space

In Geometry, the students will be investigating 2D shapes and their relationship to line and symmetry. Students will explore and identify symmetry in their environment.  Students will also be investigating the rotation of shapes through, flip, slides and turns.  They will be required to recognise lines and the rotational symmetry of shapes.

Measurement

The students will use metric units to measure and estimate mass and capacity. They will also make appropriate comparisons.

Inquiry-Biological Science

Our Science  Inquiry Unit is a Biological focus.  It involves the growing life cycle of an Air Garden and gardens that require variables.  The Air Garden and planting of seeds will involve the students being immersed in the  planting of seeds in Week 1, to harvesting the plants we've grown for our ‘Celebration of Learning’ at the conclusion of the term.  Each session will give the students opportunities for hands-on learning, and has a specific curriculum focus, as well as cross curriculum learning.
