Term 1 Week 8- 22nd March 2024
We loved hearing the beautiful stories from the long weekend! From camping, to beach trips and everything in between. The students are impressing us everyday with how well and quickly they have all settled and gotten used to this new routine of school! We already have some exciting countdowns to your next holiday adventures in a couple weeks. If your child has any photos from what you get up to during weekends or Holidays, we love to share them with the class!
What we are learning!
Maths:
In maths we continue to learn the days of the week. We are also learning about the months of the year, and we are familiarising ourselves with our birth month and its season. Singing through the days of the week and the months of the year at home is a great way to continue the learning between school and home.
Little Learners love literacy:
Our Little Learners Love Literacy program is going extremely well. As it was a short week, we focused on our heart words. Heart words are words that we learn by heart because we can’t sound them out. At this stage in the program, we are learning; I, my, My, the and The. Every student was sent home with these words in their blue satchels a few weeks ago. You are encouraged to practise these as often as possible. We have been focusing on the difference between the heart words with a lower case at the beginning, and the upper case at the beginning of the word. Every student is improving so well in their overall letter recognition and formation!
Writing:
In writing, we have been focussing on counting the amount of words in a sentence. We have also learnt the difference between a letter and a sound. We have learnt that some words have the same sounds as letters, and some trick us and have a different amount of letters and sounds! We also begin each writing lesson with some handwriting. During these sessions, we focus on the size and formation of each letter, ensuring it is staying on the lines.
Reading:
In reading we have a weekly mentor text. We read this text each day exploring different parts of the text. This week, we continue to learn about narratives. Our mentor text this week has been ‘Humpty Dumpty’. We are learning how to sequence a story, as every story has a beginning, middle and end.
Leader In me:
We focus on our 7 habits with everything that we do, both in the classroom, in the yard and even at home! We encourage students to be proactive and make positive choices without being asked to! This week, we are focusing on Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. This habit is all about active communication and understanding.
Inquiry:
This week we begin creating our class poster that says ‘we are leaders in prep A/B’. Each student has a letter that they are in charge of colouring. When these are finished, they will be proudly displayed in our classrooms. We can't wait to show you when it is finished!
