This week in Visual Arts, all students continued to focus on their animal categories. Foundation students worked on the art elements of line, shape and space. They followed step-by-step instructions on how to draw a butterfly, using oil pastels and watercolour paints. Year 1/2 students continued to work on their marine animal art piece, where they drew a sea animal and used water colour paints and watercolour twistable crayons to highlight their lines and allow their animal to stand out. Year 3/4 students continued to work on their rainforest animal art piece, where they drew a rainforest animal, they then were able to choose which medium; oil or dry pastels, watercolour, or acrylic paint to create their art piece. To help the students complete their final steps of their art piece, they were able to use watercolour twistable crayons to highlight their lines and add extra detail to allow their animal to stand out. Year 5/6 students continued to also create their African animal’s art piece, where they too chose their medium: oil or dry pastels, watercolour, or acrylic paint. Students were also able to use watercolour twistable crayons to highlight their lines and add extra detail to allow their animal to stand out. I am so impressed with how all students are enjoying their art and how hard they are working to create their art pieces.
In culture studies last week, Foundation and Year 4 students continued to learn about South Africa animals: the ‘big five’. Students were able to complete their African animal masks using oil pastels and also developed their cutting skills to cut out the animal face shape.
Over the past two weeks in PE students in years 1-6 continued to develop their understanding of cricket, working through the skills of catching, throwing, batting and bowling. The students enjoyed developing these skills finishing with a mini game of one person bowling to their partner who was batting. I was very impressed with how much each student improved with their skills.
This week students in years 3-6 were provided a unique opportunity to understand and learn the skills of La Crosse. Our very own Mr B (56 teacher) represents Malvern La Crosse club and also Australia and through his club he organise two members to come out and introduce the sport to our students. It was a great opportunity and the students had a great time. Thankyou Mr B for organising this and well done to all the students for their participation and enthusiasm.
Students in years 1 and 2 had a session of rotational skills with a focus on catching, throwing and target skills further developing their skills from the cricket sessions.
Foundation students have worked on running technique and mini games that has a focus on tea work and working together. Their has been a focus watching the ball, looking straight ahead and helping each other. They have had a lot of fun working together through these activities.
Students in years 4-6 played their final week of Summer Sports. This Friday they put all of their skills and learning together as they compete in a Lightning Premiership, playing a round robin event against all of the other schools they have played this term.
All of our students have had a great term of sport, and some for the first time playing in a team sport. Their organisation, support and encouragement of each other and the other schools we have played against has been amazing.
They should all be very proud of their efforts and see if they can put it all together.
A special mention to our Girls Teeball team who have gone through the term undefeated and the boys tennis team who have only lost one round. Well done to these teams.
I know you will have a lot of fun on the Lightning Premiership day, and good luck.
Thanks to the following teachers and staff for their help throughout the term in organising these sports and students.
Mr Duckett, Ms Simos, Mr Boontjes, Mrs Baker, Ms Claudia, Mr Nick and Ms Anna.
Thankyou to some of our parents for their help too, Briony, Robbie and Claire, it is greatly appreciated.

PE/Sports Coordinator
The term is already coming to an end, how crazy! We had an amazing library start this year, and I am very proud of all the leaders that are helping every week.
At assembly yesterday, we crowned our Reader Leaders for this term.
The class that has borrowed the most is 34C with an amazing 220 books! Very well done.
The student who read the most is Yarick. He borrowed an impressive 27 books this term!
Keep on reading, everybody, and maybe you will win next term.
There are some changes being planned in the library right now, so keep your eyes open whenever you are there.
I hope everybody has a restful holiday break, and see you again in Term 2.
The preps have enjoyed their first weeks of Auslan. We have learnt that Auslan is the sign language of the Australian deaf community. It’s a way of communicating using visual hand shapes in combination with body language and facial expressions. They have all learnt to sign hello, how are you, good and started learning the alphabet focusing on the first letters in their names. They have been very enthusiastic and would love to show you what they have learnt.
As the end of term approaches we have been learning our final topic, Vegetables. The students have learnt a lot of signs for different foods throughout the term including breakfast foods and some items you might find at the shops – ice-cream was a popular one to remember! Next time you are out at the supermarket maybe they can show you the signs for some of the vegetables they find or items like bread, milk and eggs.
