Amazing 5/6

What have we been up to?

Can you believe there are only 2 weeks to go!

We have had a very busy couple of weeks. Our Year 5 students completed Naplan. We are so proud of all their efforts and their willingness to give it their all!

Students began their Time unit in Maths. They were looking at all things calendars, schedules, clocks and timetables. The students continued to work on their spelling program, Morpheme Magic and continued to improve their prefix and suffix knowledge. Literacy has seen the students begin Book Club. All the students were very excited to begin their new class text. 5/6A is reading Bridge to Terabithia, 5.6B is reading A Wrinkle in Time and 5/6C is reading The Callers.

We want to congratulate all the students on their continued dedication to completing their homework. Apart from a couple of late arrivals, everyone got their homework in on time and the standard was excellent. Please continue to support your student with this and Homework Club is every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4pm. It is free and parents do not have to attend.

Interschool sports has also been a huge success and the level of ability has only been exceeded by the sportsmanship shown. The Girls tee-ball is undefeated, the cricket team is improving, the girls volleyball has had their first win and the tennis team is getting better with every match. Please remember that your child will need a hat and a water bottle on Fridays. The students are very excited to be participating in the Lightning Premiership THIS FRIDAY!

We also had our first Kindergarten and Prep buddy sessions this week. Our Year 6’s went next door to North Cheltenham Preschool and met with the staff and 3 and 4 year olds there. They spent the session getting to know each other by participating in just dance and a variety of activities. Our Year 5’s spent the afternoon colouring and drawing with their Prep buddies, there were smiles and laughs all around.

From all of the 5/6 teaching team we want to thank and congratulate all the 5/6 students on a fabulous start to 2024. They have met and held up their high expectations and are growing into wonderful role models and leaders for the school community. We wish all the 5/6 families a safe, happy and restful holiday period.

Looking forward in our learning:

Morpheme Magic:

The focus of the coming weeks is the suffixes -ed. This will include how to use them to describe tense and actions in our writing.

Literacy:

In literacy we are drafting, editing and publishing our narratives reflecting on the term that was and continuing to immerse ourselves in Book Club.

Maths:

We will continue with our short unit on time, specifically understanding 24 hour time, using and creating schedules and timetables and planning activities based around a schedule.

From the Students:

Hi I'm Niamh and I'm a leader in music,

And I’m Jhoz and I’m a leader in art and dinosaurs,

And this week in 5/6 B the 56s had buddies. It was fun.

We also started reading "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L’Engle.

Here is the blurb: “Charles and Meg and their friend Calvin travel through a “wrinkle in time” in search of their missing father. Can they beat the evil forces they meet on their dangerous journey through time and space?” We learned CPR this week, too, and it was a good experience.

Thank you for reading!
