Connect: Year 6

Term Two 2024 - 6A, 6B & 5/6C

Dear Families,

I hope that you all enjoyed watching the Olympics!  It provided plenty of action and stories throughout the competition and was certainly a great advertisement for fair play and respect.  While winning Gold medals was amazing, it was great to see athletes celebrating personal bests regardless of where they finished.

What a week it has been weather wise too!  I love seeing the cherry blossoms come into bloom as that is the indication that we have finally moved out of the depths of winter. Spring is such a beautiful time in Melbourne and with the Mornington Peninsula on our doorstep, it's a wonderful chance to go for a drive and take in the sights in the sunshine.

The students have continued to work well and are having a great time in Grade 6!

Upcoming Learning

Literacy

We will be finishing RUNT this week.  We have worked extensively with our study of the book completing comprehension activities on each chapter, studying the characters and analysing the plot- and enjoying the wonderful story that it is! Many of the students are excited that the Movie adaptation is coming to the cinemas on September 12th, so expect a bit of pleading from them to go and see it!

Our small reading groups have been going along nicely and we will continue to move our way through the chosen texts in our small groups.  This gives each student a chance to read aloud and to listen and talk about what is happening in the book.

We have been writing Information Reports on Animals, Household Objects, Countries and other areas of interest. They have been learning a lot from each other when we have shared this information in groups.

Numeracy

We will be revisiting Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and how they relate to each other in Numeracy in the next few weeks and choosing when you would use each one.

In the applied side of the subject, we are focusing on data collection and how to best represent it in graph and table form and how to analyse and use statistics.  We will be looking at how we can calculate the Mean, (average) Median, Mode and Range of a set of numbers and how we can use this information to prove statements and make predictions on what should happen through probability.

Inquiry

We will continue with our study of electricity and will be not only creating circuits, but designing and building our own houses that have working switches and lights. Unfortunately, we don't have the time to build them to full scale, but we will be using shoe boxes.  It's a lot of fun!

Wellbeing

Our Well-being focus will be gender norms and involves exploring the roles and behaviours that society traditionally associates with being male or female. It is crucial to foster an understanding of these concepts in a way that promotes equality, respect, and self-expression. By discussing gender norms, students can learn to critically analyse stereotypes and the impact they have on individuals and society. Encouraging open conversations about gender helps students appreciate diversity and understand that everyone should have the freedom to pursue their interests and express themselves without being confined by societal expectations.

Thank you for your continued support.
