The Next Fortnight of Learning
Literacy
In Reading, we have continued our unit on Historical Fiction using our mentor text "The night they stormed Eureka" by Jackie French. Students have been learning to locate key information in the text to identify historical elements and practised answering comprehension questions about the text.
During Writing sessions students have been creating unique diary entries from the view of a character living during the Eureka Stockade. Students have been exploring using historical and fictional elements to create their pieces. We will continue drafting, editing and publishing these over the next week.
Maths
Over the next fortnight we will begin learning about division. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of strategies to solve problems ensuring they show their working out. We will be learning about fact families and the link between multiplication and division and addition and subtraction and how this can assist in solving problems.
For example, if we know 5 x 4=20 we also know that 4 x 5=20, 20÷4=5 and 20÷5=4.
This term, we will continue to teach students a variety of quick, fun Maths games to consolidate their knowledge of timetables and division, such as Multo, Flip game, 3 in a row and Salute.
Inquiry
Over the next two weeks students will begin exploring the outer planets of the solar system. This will include investigating the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. To guide this exploration students will research questions such as; Who discovered the planet, and when? What is the atmosphere of the planet? What is the weather and temperature of the planet? How long is a day and a year on the planet?
Wellbeing
This term as part of our Wellbeing learning students will be exploring the following topics:
- Gender and Identity
- Help Seeking
- Positive and negative emotions
- Recognising mixed emotions
Celebration of Learning
5/6 Sport - 3 x 3 Basketball
In recent weeks our Year 5 students have participated in various Olympic sports during 5/6 sport sessions. So far our students have played soccer, handball and 3 x 3 basketball. Here are some photos from our basketball games last week!
Maths Learning - Area and Length
As part of our recent maths learning students worked together on a task titled 'Are you Square? Students were required to predict if their arm span and height were the same or different, then accurately measure with a partner. They then had to show their measurements in the form of a shape and find out their perimeter and area.
Kitchen Garden 5B
5B had a fantastic morning at kitchen garden. Students worked together to maintain the school garden including watering plants, planting parsley and looking after the chickens. We enjoyed a delicious roast pumpkin soup with warm cheese and herb scones.
