Self-Management Skills

Approaches to Learning Skills (ATLS) are an integral part of the IB. The ATL skills are designed to help students ‘learn how to learn’ and are intended to be applied across all discipline areas.

One of the five Approaches to Learning is ‘Self-management Skills’. Much like the fruit of the Spirit, self-control, self-management skills can help guide our students in making better decisions. Focusing on self-management skills also builds strength in organisation and states of mind. During the primary years, students develop the understanding that when we are aware of our body and mind connections, we can make better choices. Through exploring the states of mind, we learn the importance of a growth mind set and how to overcome setbacks and challenges in our learning as well as our life outside the classroom.

Why are self-management skills important?

I think self-management skills are important because you need to be able to control yourself in different situations. You need to make sure you and everyone else around you is safe. Building self-management skills helps make sure whatever you do, it is the right choice.

It helps us learn to manage our time and get our work done. Setting goals is important too because sometimes it can be hard to reach a goal, but we have to show perseverance.

Self-management skills are important because it teaches us to control our emotions when doing hard things. It helps us challenge ourselves and set long term goals. Also, it can influence your behaviour so we can focus and do the right thing.
