Self-Control and Perseverance

"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love." (2 Peter 1:5-7)

The Bible has a lot to say about self-control. Whether it be in relation to the choices we make or controlling our emotions, the Bible tells us that self-control is linked with knowledge, perseverance, godliness and love. The Bible also tells us that with the virtue of self-control we can avoid the deception, corruption and temptations of this world.

For our Secondary Years students, there are a lot of influences around them that require a lot of self-control to manage both the choices made and the emotions that arise. Whether it be temptations from gaming that lead to angry outbursts, or the pull of social media that distracts students from working on assignments, to the pressure to act a certain way in social settings, a lack of self-control (self-discipline, self-management) can lead to self-destructive behaviours. As a community we need to help each other in achieving and exercising self-control, whether that be through role-modelling of appropriate behaviour, setting boundaries, or holding each other accountable.

Self-control is not something that you have or don't have. It is something that we have to constantly work on developing through perseverance. And as we learn to manage and exercise self-control, we find ourselves being transformed into godly people who show love and kindness to others. While our strive for self-control is something we can do for ourselves, ultimately, it is through reliance on God that we are able to fully exercise self-control in our lives.
