Head of Sport Report
What a great ending we had to the NSW Blue’s program this year with a nail biting final match. It was great to see the number of locals and BMGS students that made the effort to come to the open training during the school holidays. I really believe that we contributed to the success of this team.
The second half of the winter sports season is well underway with only two weekends left until finals. Please ensure that you are attending all games and trainings to give your team the best chance of making finals.
Congratulations
Cross Country
Keeden Harrison ran at the NSW Athletics Cross Country Titles at Nowra and placed 2nd. He has now qualified for the National Titles in Launceston at the end of August. He also ran at the NSW All Schools carnival at the start of the term and has qualified to attend the School Sport Australia Championships later in the year. Congratulations Keeden and all the best with your upcoming competitions.
Golf
Jesse Hardaker competed as a member of the NSWCIS team at the NSW All Schools Golf Championships at the end of last term. He competed well across the 3 days and came out in a respectful position of 30th from the 72 competitors. Good work Jesse and we look forward to hearing of your future successes.
Netball
Earlier this year Olivia Harris just missed out on the Australian U19 team. Just before the holidays she was called up to join the team at the Australian Institute of Sport. This was a fantastic experience for Olivia and she is to be congratulated on all the effort that she has put in to gain this success. Also over the holidays, Olivia was selected in the inaugural NSW 21’s team and she will compete in an inter-state competition later in the year. Keep up the good work Olivia.
BMGS and ISA Athletics Carnival
The BMGS Athletics carnival was held this week and I would like to thank all staff and students for helping ensure the success of this event. We also had a number of parents who came along to help run events. Once again thank you for your efforts.
The next step is the ISA Athletics Carnival that will be held at SOPAC on the 7th September. The team will be placed on the noticeboard over the next week and students will be emailed if they are selected.
If you are an experienced hurdler or triple jumper, please come and see me at my office if you wish to be considered to compete in these events.

Girls Football – Saturday 27th July (Round 8)
BMGS First XI Girls drew against Chevalier College (1 – 1)
The First's set off bright and early to Chevalier college, hoping to secure another win. We knew that it was going to be a difficult game as we only had 9 players. As a result, we brought up 3 juniors, shout out to Jess, Elise and Bronte. Special shoutout to Bronte for some amazing saves! The game started fairly evenly, with tough, wet conditions making it tricky to get the ball up the field. We went into half time 0-0, and reshuffled positions, ready to play hard in the next half. We started the second half with a renewed intensity, making some solid runs into their half. A foul led to a free kick outside the box, which Ellie neatly put away. We played well for the rest of the half, thwarting there goal attempts, until literally the last seconds of the game when they got through to score a dubious goal, leaving the score 1-1. We played very well with limited players and are ready to take the feedback into the next game.

BMGS Junior Girls defeated Chevalier College (3 – 2) – friendly match
The Junior girls were slightly out of practice after the holiday break, but came away with a hard-fought win over Chevalier College in their friendly inter-division game, winning 3-2 with only 10 players. A nice hattrick from Elise and some brave goal keeping from Bronte secured the win. The whole team pulled together to contribute and give their all to set up many opportunities, and defending well, and their team spirit cannot be faulted. Well done team!.

Boys Football
BMGS 13 Boys were defeated by St Spyridon (2 – 3)
We were relieved the game wasn’t rained out as Saturday morning turned out to be cold with a persistent drizzle. We played St Spyridon on our first home game of the season and were determined to turn our previous narrow loss into a win on home soil. Unfortunately, we found ourselves 3 nil down at half time having been disheveled by some great passing and aggressive soccer from the opposition.
An inspiring half time chat and some slight defensive line adjustment, had us the better team in the second team, clawing our way back to 2 – 3. Sadly, the game ended before more opportunities to score presented themselves, however the boys should be proud of their inspiring second half comeback.

BMGS 14 Boys defeated St Spyridon (2 – 1)
The boys played their first home game this week against St Spyridon's College (Spyros), last term’s win seemed a long time ago and I was slightly concerned that the long holidays had made the boys rusty.
The game was very back and forth at the start, Spyros having a few shots at goal and our passes not quite connecting up front. Our defence stood strong and we grew more and more into the game. Thomas and Oli linked up and Oli was through on goal again this time dinking the ball over the keeper and into the net. We took the lead and saw out the half, going into the break 1-0 up.
The lads were determined in the second half to kick on and put a few more past Spyros. Our attacking trident picked up where they left off, creating chances and testing the opposition keeper. Our midfield of Max, Calvin and Wilbur kept Spyros penned in their own half. When they broke through Angus, Jenson, Lorence, Eli, Emmerson and Milo were so strong in their challenges proving nearly impenetrable.
However a sloppy shot trickled it’s way towards Silas in goal, with the ground and ball being wet, the ball just slipped through his hands, a very unfortunate goal to concede. To their credit the boy’s didn’t drop their heads, we were miles clear of the opposition and dominating, we just had to take our chance.
Oli picked up the ball just past half way, turned his defender and lofted the ball over to Thomas who was through on goal. He poked the ball past the keeper and we were 2-1 up. Spyros became more agitated and our tackles weren’t quite connecting. We stayed resilient and our defence stood strong. We saw out the game 2-1, our second win on the bounce and a thoroughly deserved result.

BMGS 15 Boys drew against St Spyridon (2 – 2)
The boys were excited to play their first home game of the season, mainly because it meant they were all able to sleep in for a few extra hours! The first half kicked off with plenty of play in both teams offensive third with our defence holding back any advance by the opposition. Midway through the first half St Spyridon made a run down the wing and were able to slot away their shot to take the lead 1-0. This did not deter the boys as they pushed for the equaliser and our first goal of the season. A brilliant pass from our defensive midfield rock Armando opened the St Spyridon defence up with Fergus winning the race to the ball and was now one on one with the keeper. As we all took a breath on the sideline in anticipation Fergus calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to score our first goal of the season!!
Unfortunately in the second half we fell behind to a quick St Spyridon counter attack, 2-1 St Spyridon. As we had 4 substitutes available I was able to continually rotate players to ensure we had fresh legs on the field and everyone got a run. We even had a guest appearance from Orlando who was playing his first game and he was fantastic down the left wing. The ability to switch things around was great as it kept the opposition guessing and this led to an opportunity as the game was coming to an end. Armando had the ball near halfway and split the St Spyridon defence with a great through ball down the left wing to Keedan (another player making his debut) who grabbed the chance and charged towards goal. He was about to take the shot when a defender came in with a tackle, Keedan dragged the ball back and slide around the defender to coolly slam the ball between the keeper and the near post. Goal!! 2-2.
Our back 3 of Tom, Jaiden and Mitchell have formed as a solid defensive unit this year and have ensured not much gets past them and anything that does get past them is cleared by our sweeper/goalkeeper/want-to-be striker Toby. The BMGS midfield of Fabian (look at that hair!!), Harry, Kit, Armando, Dante, Riley, Sam (who also loves playing in defense), and Orlando battled all day and never shirked out of a challenge. Whilst our forward unit of Keedan, Xavier and Fergus are going to be a force up front as they play more games together.
I am very proud of the spirit in which the boys play the game and how they play as a team.
Chris Johnson (Coach – 15 Boys Football)
