SLA
SLA had a very exciting start to Term 3. We travelled via train leaving from Reservoir Station into the city. Our destination was the Shrine of Remembrance. This visit was inspired by our reading of the book War Horse, which deepened our understanding of the significance of war memorials. After exploring the Shrine and paying their respects, the students enjoyed some free time in the beautiful Botanical Gardens, where they had the chance to relax and reflect on their experiences. It was a day filled with learning, reflection, and connection to the stories they've been studying in class.
Here are some reflections from students from our excursion:
On Friday we went to the Shrine of Remembrance to learn more about World War 1and 2. Each SLA class had a different tour guide, our tour guide was Ken. He told us that the Shrine was built to remember the men and women who fought in the war and didn’t come back. Ken also took us around the shrine, he showed us a plaque that said: GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN. Inside of the shrine there were pictures of the ships and equipment the army took in World War 1. The Shrine is a quiet space for people to come pay their respects to the men and women that were in the war. Celeste B
Last Friday the SLAs went to the Shrine of Remembrance to get a better understanding of World War I and II. We started by watching a short video about when and why the Shrine was built. Then we went with our tour guide Ken, he told and showed us lots about the Shrine. He spoke about what the pilots, fighters and sailors wore. There were timelines with dates of invasions, and plaque that says, ‘GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN’. On 11 AM on 11th November the sun light will shines across the word LOVE for a minute while the Last Post plays. Alannah C
The thousands of steps made me tired right away, when I finished a flight of stairs but once I went inside the shrine, I was amazed of how big it was. There were many suits and medals that belonged to the soldiers from different countries.
Plaque and flags
In the very middle of the shine there was this plaque that was placed in the ground it said, “Greater Love Hath No Man” and to either side of it there were the Australian and New Zealand flags. In the same hallway there where flags with the Union Jack on it. After that we went on to the balcony and looked at the view and took some pictures. Nicholas D
