Senior School News Yr 5/6

Mr Tom Brophy (5/6B), Miss Carrie Kudelka (5/6K) & Miss Chelsea Perrin (5/6P)

Welcome to Week 4.

We’re almost halfway through the term already - unbelievable! We’ve had a jam packed fortnight which seems to be the theme of Term 3. Rehearsals for Madagascar have kicked up a gear with the release of tickets last Monday and securing of many costumes and sets, students off to Division Soccer have continued Wednesday after-school training with Mr Montalto, and many of our students competed in a very fun and successful Hoop Time last Friday in Mill Park.

A special shout out also goes to Victoria Dang in 5/6K for her fantastic effort at the National Swimming Championships last week. Well done, Victoria! Hopefully we’ll see you at the Olympics in the near future 🙂

Technology (InquiRE & Literacy)

Our Reading and Writing focus has continued to unpack our Inquiry topic of Technology. Students have been delving into the evolution of technology and how far we’ve come since biblical times, comparing and contrasting the tools and their purposes.

We’re also researching the insides of a computer and how they interact. Last week, we looked at the motherboard, storage types (solid state drives [SSD] and hard drives [HD]), the central processing unit (CPU), network interface controller (NIC) and random-access memory (RAM). Week 4 was all about differentiating between input and output devices (keyboards and microphones versus screens and speakers), as well as connectivity types (infrared and bluetooth).

Additionally, we have been writing procedural texts. 5/6P were lucky enough to blend up their own smoothies last Thursday, detailing their group’s process on fun posters with Canva. We had some very interesting concoctions but all received a thumbs up from the students!

Maths

Week 3 marked the beginning of our Measurement unit. Jumping straight in, students revised their knowledge of perimeter and area by measuring up our ⅚ classroom.

Their abilities are being instantly applied to a student-led project where they are designing their dream house. From brainstorming different floor plans, to measuring up rooms and the total perimeter and area of their house (2nd story and backyard included if they are after an extra challenge), the students are architects for the next few weeks.

RE

With Confirmation fast approaching (September 13th and 15th for those participating), we have begun looking at saints and spirit-filled people. An important milestone in their Catholic journey, the students are engaging in discussions of the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. On August 30th, our Grade 6s will also be heading to Lysterfield for a Confirmation Reflection Day with other schools from our Parish. We look forward to those insightful discussions.

Rehearsals

A HUGE congratulations to all students, having now learnt the entirety of our Madagascar Jr production. Stage blocking, songs and dances are all in the bag and with that, we have started full school run-throughs weekly. The students are looking fantastic and they can’t wait to perform to family and friends on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th September (final week of Term 3). Costumes have started being assigned and more details regarding hair, makeup and costume requirements will be sent home as we get closer to the performance.
