Prep Learning Reflection

We’re almost halfway through Term 3 already! Thank you so much to those who attended Parent-Teacher Interviews. They're such a valuable opportunity to celebrate our students, touch base on their challenges and success and collaboratively work alongside you to encourage the best out of the students!

Over the past fortnight, we’ve continued on with our learning routines, explored some new and exciting topics and we celebrated 100 Days of Prep! The Preps looked fantastic in their old people costumes and had so much fun with all of the ‘100’ activities we did on the day. We’ve been talking about and watching the Olympics and the students have loved cheering for the green and gold. The excitement continues over the coming weeks with Science Week and Book Week! Keep an eye out on Compass for posts announcing any special events coming up!

In Mathematics, our Explicit teaching program is beginning to combine the concepts and skills the students have learnt over the year so far. We’re beginning to introduce addition with numerals, counting by 10s and using our bundling sticks to learn place value up to 100! The students are starting to see the value in all of their hard work with numeracy and it’s great seeing their smiles when they solve number problems! The students have also been using the iPads to practice their maths. They’re becoming very independent navigating the apps we use and it’s great to see some of the students are even practicing with Mathletics at home!

For Literacy, the students are learning about Fiction this term. We’re exploring a wide selection of incredible books during our Reading sessions and learning about all the important elements of fiction stories. We’re then using these stories to inspire our own creative writing pieces, developing the students writing skills, confidence and creativity! We’ll be continuing on with our SoundsWrite program and students will be beginning to apply their letter sounds knowledge to blend consonants (like ‘st’ in ‘lost’ or ‘nt’ in ‘ant’).

This term for our Unit of Work the students are undertaking a ’Safety Safari’! The preps have thought about themselves and their families. Now they are learning about how they can explore their environment and stay safe at the same time. They’ll describe simple actions they can take to keep themselves and their classmates healthy and safe, explore the people that are important to help keep them safe, and where these people can be found in our community. We’ve already had some wonderful and informative incursions from Victoria Police, Fire Rescue Victoria and RACV. The children loved these events and learnt about being safe at school, at home, around roads and in the community.
