Congratulations to Our New UQ Science Ambassadors
Seven of our senior students have been successful in their application to become our new UQ Science Ambassadors. Ambassadors will be encouraged to champion science at our school by developing and delivering events, including National Science Week activities, and encouraging other senior science students to share their experiences with students in all years.
The long-established UQ Science Ambassador program has been running for more than 20 years. Thousands of students from schools across Queensland have participated in the program. The program challenges students to develop their leadership abilities and communication skills, and offers them the chance to connect with like-minded students across Queensland as well as academics and students from UQ's Science Leaders Academy.
Meet our new ambassadors:
Teon (Year 11)
“Science is a way to understand the intricacies of our reality. It is a drink to quench the thirst of curiosity. But seriously it is just amazing being able to understand something that you previously considered impossible. The point where it all just clicks is why I have a passion for Science.”
Jamie (Yr 11)
“Science intrigues me because it shows us how life works. Chemistry is all around us, the configurations of electrons orbiting atoms, the positive and negative charges repelling each other causing new creations of molecules. I am looking forward to being part of the UQ Science Ambassador program, not just to create new friends, but to make new memories.”
Sarah (Year 11)
“Science has been a major personal interest of mine for as long as I can remember, as well as being involved in leadership. I believe the UQ Science Ambassador Program will provide an opportunity to further my love of learning and connect with others that share the same mindset. As someone who is actively working towards a career in medicine, science has always been the most interesting of subjects, and there is always something else that I am seeking to learn about it.”
Presiyan (Year 11)
“Science interest me because I whole heartedly enjoy experimenting in ways no one has ever tried before. The history of science inspires me to challenge and wonder what else is waiting to be discovered. As a Science Ambassador, I want to have this passion, work with others and learn about the fascinating technological and scientific advancements we’ve made in recent years.”
Thomas (Year 11)
“Throughout my life, science has inspired me from the curiosity it has sparked and allowed me to search for answers to nearly anything. It can explain, in a logical format, ideas from how the universe started down to the chemical composition of rocks. This allows us as humans to apply this knowledge to complex, real-world scenarios, furthering our standard of living through social, technological, environmental and economic advancements. Importantly, these reasons don’t just spark curiosity in myself, but it can inspire so many other people. This creates a growth in knowledge in many areas from simply just asking Why”
Harley (Year 10)
“Science, as a whole, is the subject I find most interesting in all aspects. I really enjoy physics and how things in the universe interact and how everything came to be. All in all, it is simple to say that every factor, ideas, concept and design in Science is something I utterly adore. It’s just fascinating how deep everything, everywhere can go.”
Samuel (Year 10)
“I enjoy learning how the universe and our planet works through the lens of analysis and scientific inquiry. I believe that science is the best way for us to advance the human condition, and work towards solving many of the issues which afflict our planet. I believe in the power of science education and I want to be a Science Ambassador so that I can inspire other students to develop a love of science like mine.”
