Dunlop Building News

Over the past few weeks the Dunlop Building has been buzzing with activity. In addition to Science/STEM excursions and incursions, all classes have been engaged in practical activities and project work.

In Science, Year 7 classes have been experimenting with dry ice in their introduction to chemistry, and students in Year 8 and Year 9 have been using the scientific method to design and plan their own experiments.

Students interested in participating in co-curricular Science/STEM opportunities should check Compass regularly for upcoming events.

VCE Chemistry Guest Speaker

Seamus Delaney from Deakin University visited EDSC on Wednesday 5 March to present information on key aspects from the Chemistry Study Design: Sustainability and Green Chemistry Principles. Students from Year 11 and Year 12 Chemistry were invited to attend.

Seamus Delaney (PhD SFHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in Science and Technology Education, and Science, Technology, Environmental Education (STEE) Discipline Head, responsible for co-ordinating STEE units across Deakin University's cloud and physical campuses. Seamus has worked as a educator, researcher and leader in both Australia and Switzerland over his last 15 years. Seamus' research interests are chemistry education, systems thinking teaching and learning approaches, sustainability education, the incorporation of augmented and virtual reality into teaching and learning, and science education in out-of-school/informal learning contexts.

Seamus provided interesting examples of how aspects of the Sustainability and Green Chemistry Principles could be assessed in SACs and the end of year exam. We are extremely grateful to Seamus for his insights.

Paws In Schools Incursion

Student Report

The Paws In Schools organisation came to our school with their dog Radar to assist our learning in classical and operant conditioning in Year 12 Psychology. Throughout this incursion they taught us their training methods for their dogs and related those methods to our current studies.  Radar, in particular is a trained scent dog and was able to keep us engaged with his tricks. Within this incursion we gained many practical examples that we can relate to as we continue on in the topic.

Year 12 Physics Luna Park Excursion

Student Report

The excursion to Luna Park was a rollercoaster of an adventure (both figuratively and literally), yet an unforgettable experience nonetheless. Despite the vigorous heat, each and every one of us managed to make the most out of such a unique opportunity, taking on the challenge of as many rides as we could, whilst simultaneously expanding our understanding of motion. As a whole, the day was an exciting blend of thrills, knowledge, and maybe a little bit of nausea, adding to our collection of memories for our final year of high school.

Grand Prix Excursion

Student Reports

On Thursday 13 March, 60 students and 5 teachers attended the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park and explored new innovative Formula 1 technology and watched the super cars race. Students were able to explore vintage automobiles, watch Grandstand Matches, Lightning McQueen racing around the track, universities showcasing their achievements, rides including F1 simulators, and a Ferris wheel overlooking over the track. It was a blast participating and being able to see various famous Formula 1 drivers at the Melbourne Walk.

The 2025 Grand Prix excursion was a wonderful experience for myself and my peers.  We were given the chance to experience a virtual representation of what a Formula 1 driver goes through while in the cockpit, with the G-forces pushing them down. Additionally, the STEM related innovation hubs were a massive part of the event, introducing students to STEM related careers and technology. I would highly recommend this opportunity to everyone of all ages, especially to those who have an interest in STEM related careers.

The Grand Prix excursion is definitely something worth going to. Anyone who has an interest in robotics or cars, especially highly modified cars, would be exhilarated by attending this wonderful experience. In addition to this, the experience provided by the stands gives an excellent learning experience while also being enjoyable.
