Harmony Day is coming - Friday 21st March 2025

Wear a Splash of Orange

Harmony Week is the acknowledgement and celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

At St. John’s, we are acknowledging Harmony Day on Friday the 21st of March. All children, staff and parents are invited to wear your cultural dress or a ‘splash of orange’ to show your support. This can be a hair tie, a pair of socks, a tee shirt or a coloured ribbon or other ‘splash of orange.’  All other items of clothing are school uniform.

There will be activities during the day and the Prayer Gathering at 2.30pm on Friday 21st March will be hosted by the 5/6 Hub in Joan’s Yard and will focus on Harmony Day.

While Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s rich cultural diversity, it is also important to focus on the urgency of combating racism wherever and whenever it arises. It is particularly important to support childrens’ developing understanding and to reinforce a ‘zero tolerance’ attitude towards racism and racial and cultural vilification.

March 21st is The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD)

We encourage all families to have these important conversations with their children and young people to ensure that ‘casual racism’ and discrimination based on a person’s ethnicity, cultural and faith traditions is clearly communicated as being unacceptable in our community and in the wider society. Early and frequent conversations with our children about impact - socially, emotionally and psychologically, are vital to ensure that all people in our diverse community and in the wider society may feel safe, included, supported and valued every day - not just on Harmony Day.
