Year 3 & 4 Super Soils Incursion

Children in Year 3 & 4 participated in a Super soils incursion on the 6th of March where they had the opportunity to explore soil with our guest educator, Cam. The children discussed the concepts of organic and inorganic materials, and how we can be sustainable by returning these materials to the land. Working collaboratively, they got their hands dirty as they constructed a mini compost jar, layering various organic materials. In addition to this, the children learned about life within the soil, held worms, and observed the setup of our new worm hotels.

Our new underground worm hotels

Last week we got some new worm farms for two of our garden beds at the farm. Worms like to live in dark, moist, cool places. This is why it is important to put the lid back on the worm farm if you have had a look inside. Please see one of our sustainability leaders if you need help with learning how to put the lid back on.

Cooking

Each fortnight the children have been cooking food from a different country in the world using fresh produce from our farm. Last week we cooked Roasted Vegetable Couscous Salad. This food comes from Tunisia. Here are five facts about Tunisia.

  1. Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa
  2. Several scenes from Star Wars movies were filmed in Tunisia
  3. The Great Mosque of Kairouan, built in the 7th century, is one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world.
  4. Tunisia used to be part of the Roman empire
  5. The official language in Tunisia is Arabic (however people also speak French as it used to be a French colony)
