Principal's Message
Mr Forrest
Two students from Wedderburn College will have the opportunity to attend a two week adventure in Papua New Guinea July of this year. This will be an all expenses paid experience, thanks to the generosity of the local RSL, Lions Club, Wedderburn College and numerous local donors. Special thanks to our staff member, Peter Zubov and Wedderburn/Korong Vale RSL representatives Roger Patterson, Owen Rule and Diane Henderson who spoke to the Year 11 class about the opportunity last week. The scholarships are named after local soldiers, Albert 'Knocker' Hayes and Norman 'Digger' Letts. The two students who are successful will have to write a short essay and answer a questionnaire, complete an interview, and be prepared to train for several months in the lead up to the adventure. All information has been distributed to students.
We hope that this unique experience will continue into the future.
We would like to wish Year 8 student Rico all the very best as he is moving back to his country of birth, New Zealand. We hope you enjoyed your time living in Australia and being a student at Wedderburn College. Don't forget to barrack for Australia in the Rugby!
We have a lot going on with the school building project at the moment. Some days over 25 tradies have been on site. The KLC today is due to start with the installation of new entry doors. The heating and cooling system is installed and ready for a test run. In Block A the classrooms have plaster walls and new ceilings going in. As you can see in the photos the new art room is also taking shape. The outside of the KLC is being prepared for a giant mural that will fit into the towns 'Bird' theme. I will not spoil the surprise, however. the draft copies are spectacular and really make a statement. This mural could be installed by the end of March. With most of the unseen work such us electrical and plumbing almost completed the builders are looking forward to a big March. If all goes to plan we will be back in the KLC at the start of Term 2. Best case scenario is that the whole project may be completed by the end of May.
From COMPASS Post
Dear Parents/Guardians,
It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you of an important change to our Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) program. Due to impacts from the ongoing major capital building works at our facility and the unexpected loss of key staff members, we have made the difficult decision to pause our OSHC program effective from the end of this week. The last session will be held after school on Thursday 6th March.
This decision was not made lightly, as we know how much our program means to children and families. Our priority has always been to provide a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment, and with the current challenges we are facing, we cannot confidently maintain the high standards of care and service that your children deserve.
The planned building works will bring exciting improvements to our facilities, ultimately benefiting all students and families in the long run. However, the scope and scale of the project will create significant disruptions to the space we have available for OHSC, making it difficult to operate effectively. In addition, the unexpected loss of key staff members has further impacted our ability to run the program.
Please know that we are actively exploring solutions and hope to resume operations as soon as circumstances allow. We will keep you informed of any updates and provide support where possible in the interim.
Thank you for your understanding, patience, and ongoing support. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at 54943011.
We have commenced planning for the annual Easter School Fete.
The fete will be held on the last day of Term 1, Friday 4th April, commencing at 10am and will conclude at 2pm. This will be followed by presentations before students are finally dismissed early at 2.30pm.
We will be asking for donations, stall holders and volunteers. Our Parents & Friends Association has already started with the annual Mega Easter Raffle. All friends, family and community members are most welcome to attend.
Due to the building works we will be holding the fete in the front garden area of the school. The class who donates the most Easter eggs will receive a free lunch and activity.
Easter Egg Cont so far: 104 Record: 270 (2024). Winning Class so far: Year 11
A reminder that the Friday before the Labour Day long weekend is a School Curriculum Day. No students will be at school on Friday 7th March. Teaching staff will be attending professional development activities in the Bendigo region. Enjoy the extra long break.
It is great to see a number of students have done the right thing by starting to wear bike helmets. We have even had students use Burn Bucks to purchase them from the Burn Bank which is a great idea. This is not about anything else but making students aware of bike/scooter safety. Lookout for a feature article in this weeks Loddon Herald
From previous COMPAS post
Wedderburn Police have received numerous reports from the local community raising concerns that students at Wedderburn College are not wearing bicycle helmets whilst riding bicycles and scooters.
On 28/02/2025 local police conducted tasking to raise awareness of this issue, resulting in three students being intercepted on their way to school without a helmet, warnings were issued to educate students for their safety.
Word got around fast and sadly police noted that a parent advised students to hide their bikes showing a clear disregard for the safety of children within our community.
Police advise the following fines can be issued to children and adults showing a disregard for the law and their own safety:
Travelling on a bicycle or scooter (wheeled recreational device):
Travelling on a scooter or bike while using a mobile phone (wheeled recreational device).
Wedderburn Police want everyone to be safe on the roads.
Thanks
