Learning and Teaching
Learners in Year 3 and Year 5 will be participating in the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) assessments this week. NAPLAN is a nationwide assessment that evaluates students' skills in: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) and Numeracy.
NAPLAN provides valuable data that will support St Mary’s improved teaching strategies. While NAPLAN is just one measure of learner achievement, it plays an important role in promoting effective learning programs within schools. The assessments offer insights into:
Learner Progress – Identifies strengths and areas for improvement in literacy and numeracy. School Performance – Helps track overall school performance compared to national standards. Targeted Support – Assists in identifying learners who may need additional learning support or extension opportunities. Curriculum Planning – Informs teaching strategies and curriculum development to enhance learning outcomes. Educational Benchmarking – Allows schools to compare results with state and national averages to guide continuous improvement.
These assessments help monitor learner progress and growth and provide valuable insights into their learning. While NAPLAN is important, we encourage learners to approach the tests with a calm and positive mindset.
How to Support Your Child:
- Encourage them to get a good night’s sleep.
- Provide a healthy breakfast on test days.
- Reassure them that NAPLAN is just one part of their learning journey.
- Remind them to try their best.
We wish our learners all of the best and have a smooth and positive experience
International Mathematics Day
St Mary’s will be celebrating International Maths Day on March 14th! This year’s theme is Art and Creativity. To mark the occasion, each class has been challenged to capture a unique and artistic photograph that creatively showcases mathematics in the real world.
We’ve already received some wonderful early entries from Foundation and Year 2, who have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm!
