Yesterday, I had the pleasure of working with our Grade 1/2 cohort, modelling how to craft engaging story openings using the 5Ws—who, what, when, where, and why. Inspired by wonderful books like The Littlest Yak and Boy, students explored how great stories begin.
It was incredible to see their enthusiasm and creativity! Together, we co-constructed opening paragraphs, and I was so impressed by the rich vocabulary they contributed. Words like glancing, which they recently encountered in their InitiaLit lessons, found their way into their writing, adding depth and detail to their stories.
I look forward to returning to the Millie Building soon to see even more of their fantastic writing in action!
Alongside our PLC Leaders, I recently attended a fantastic workshop at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership with esteemed Literacy educator Emina McLean. The session provided valuable insights into evidence-based literacy practices, reinforcing our approach at Miners Rest. We walked away with new skills and a renewed confidence in our literacy teaching, excited to bring these strategies back to our classrooms to further support our students’ learning.
