Foundation/Grade 1

Literacy – Foundation

The Foundation students have started learning the names and sounds of letters, focusing on m & s. Students have been listening for the m or s sounds at the beginning of words, learning about the characters that match the sounds and practice writing the letters.

Maths – Grade 1

The Grade 1 students are in the middle of a counting and place value unit where they are learning to read, make and order 2-digit numbers. To practice 2-digit numbers they have identified missing numbers on a 100s chart, and wrote the number, ordered numbers from smallest to largest, and fixed 100s chart puzzle.

Grade 2

Inquiry – Growing Older and Wiser

The Grade 2 SK class have been exploring the concept of Growing Older and Wiser as part of our Inquiry unit. Last week, our lessons focused on key vocabulary relating to this topic, including same, different, unique, fingerprints, nervous, and risk, among others.

During a lesson on fingerprints, we delved into the meaning of unique. Students identified their own fingerprint patterns and compared them with their classmates, observing similarities and differences. This hands-on activity helped deepen their understanding of individuality and uniqueness.

English - Collaborative Learning

For the past few weeks, we have been working together during group time, building strong collaborative skills and reinforcing our learning. We engage in group activities three times a week, focusing on spelling, reading, and word work to deepen our understanding of the lessons taught throughout the week.

Through these sessions, we have developed a deeper understanding of teamwork and have mastered the key aspects of effective collaboration. This includes active listening, respectfully sharing ideas, and fostering independence in our learning.

Grade 3/4

Last Friday, we celebrated our middle school Mass, and the students who participated in the readings did an outstanding job. The rest of the students were attentive and respectful throughout the service, creating a truly thoughtful atmosphere.

In Math, we’ve just wrapped up our addition and subtraction unit. Before diving into our upcoming unit on time, we completed some important Essential Assessment testing. This was a great practice for NAPLAN which is coming up in week 7.

In writing, we have finished our narratives and are now focusing on persuasive texts. Miss Eade’s class has taken a bold stand, advocating for a nationwide ban on homework in all Australian schools, and their reasons are surprisingly compelling.

During our RRRR lessons, the Grade 3 & 4 students have unpacked what ‘Emotional Literacy’ is; labelling, understanding and expressing our emotions. As a class we have learnt and are developing the skills to - name our emotions and understand our feelings, understand that emotions have a purpose, link our body cues to feelings and emotions and learn to process, manage and respond to emotions appropriately.

During one of our lessons – What do emotions look like? Students participated in an activity called ‘The Emotions Guessing Game’. Students were required to name a range of emotions together, describe how their body might feel in response to certain emotions, share how their body language can give clues about people's emotions, and we also practiced ways to ask others about how they feel. In small groups, students designed a freeze frame that shows a situation where someone might feel a certain emotion. The class looked at each group's freeze frame and guessed the emotion that is represented.

Fruit Salad...YUMMY YUMMY!!!

Miss Eade's class made yummy fruit salad as part of our Inquiry unit. Students loved cutting and preparing a healthy meal following their investigation of the food groups.

Grade 5/6

What an incredible week we had at Burnside Camp! The children embraced every moment of this wonderful adventure—from canoeing and hiking, to admiring beautiful scenic lookouts, swimming in the surf, and learning how to ride the waves. We’re sure these experiences will leave them with lasting memories. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to share these special moments with our amazing students.

This week, our Grade 5 students have been actively preparing for NAPLAN, building their confidence and skills for the upcoming assessments. Meanwhile, our Grade 6 students have been refining their writing skills by crafting detailed recounts of their camp experiences. In Inquiry, both year levels have explored the differences between morals and dilemmas, discussing how our values influence the decisions we make. It’s been a great week of learning and reflection!
