David Bromley - Silver Butterflies
This term the Grade 3 and 4 students have been learning about iconic Australian artist David Bromley. David has exhibited widely in Australia, and also in Asia, Europe, Africa and America, and has been a finalist at the Archibald Prize six times. Inspired by his painting of butterflies, the students have created their own ‘Silver Butterflies’.
First the students created a colourful ‘background’ using paint slicks, the colours that they chose to use were ‘analogous’ meaning that they are touching on the colour wheel and therefore produced a harmonious effect.
After studying butterfly references and their own prior knowledge of butterflies, these were drawn on top of the colour using Indian Ink brush pens. The students had to evenly balance the space of the butterflies, ensuring they were a variety of sizes and shapes.
Finally, the negative space around the butterflies was painted with silver paint, making the colourful butterflies a beautiful contrast from their silver surroundings. Here are some of the outstanding butterflies from Grade 3 and 4 students:
This week Daniel from 6P shared with me a wonderful example of a still life painting that he created in Art class he attends outside of school. Using water colour paint, Daniel was able to achieve extremely realistic bottles that included light, shadow and form, remarkable work Daniel!
