Semester Reports

It might feel al little while away, but there are some important messages to share with you in regards to your child’s Semester report (coming to you late in Term 2).

Student reporting for mathematics in Victorian government schools is changing.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) recently published its revised mathematics curriculum (Mathematics curriculum 2.0). All Victorian government schools were expected to start using the Mathematics curriculum 2.0 in either 2024 or 2025.

At Karoo Primary School, in 2024 we began to carefully roll over to the updated curriculum, updating our documentation and learning more about the changes. Now in 2025, we have fully implemented the Mathematics Victorian Curriculum 2.0. A part of this change will include how Mathematics is now reported to parents in Semester 1 and 2 reports.

On your child's previous report, the teacher reported against the 3 strands of the achievement standard for mathematics (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability). Under the Mathematics curriculum 2.0, your child’s teacher will report against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single, aggregated score.

As the achievement standards reported on have changed, the first time you receive a report under the Mathematics 2.0 curriculum, it will only show achievement and not progress. For all reports after this, progress will be shown against the single achievement standard.

The VCAA made these changes to help teachers plan their teaching and learning programs in mathematics, giving them more flexibility to support students to link ideas within mathematics and also with other curriculum areas.

We want your feedback!

Last year a survey was provided early Term 3 to gauge the effectiveness of our Semester reports. Following your feedback, adjustments were made. Specifically, these included changes to the way the Work Habits were reported on. We developed a Work Habits Rubric to provides greater clarity to parents about how their child was assessed against the Work Habits. In addition to the Work Habits of ‘Effort and Engagement’ and ‘Respect and Safety’, the Specialist classes (The Arts, Performing Art, Science, LOTE, PE and Media and Technology), also replaced a small comment with an additional 3 Work Habits, including: Organisation and Time Management, Individual and Group Work, and Communication and Feedback.

Look out early in Term 2 for more communication regarding your child’s report as well as Student Led Conferences.

In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding your child’s learning and progress, I strongly urge you to speak directly to your child's classroom teacher.

In addition, my door is always open should you want to know more about how assessment and reporting is used at Karoo.

Lastly, well done to our Year 3 and 5 students who have completed 3 of the 4 NAPLAN assessments, albeit with such enthusiasm and positivity. A big shout out to our teachers who have provided a calm and organised atmosphere and prepared our students so well.

Monday students will complete the last assessment - Numeracy. Any students who were away this week will be caught up until the last school day, Friday 21st March.
