LOTE (Mandarin)

As we continue our exciting journey of learning Mandarin, our junior and senior students have been engaging in fascinating cultural and linguistic explorations. This week, our younger students have been learning about one of China’s most beloved animals—the Giant Panda (熊猫 xióngmāo). Meanwhile, our senior students have been delving into the significance of the Chinese character 福 (Fú), which represents fortune and happiness.

Junior Students: Learning About Giant Pandas

Our junior students have been captivated by the world of the Giant Panda, a national treasure of China. Through interactive activities, stories, and videos, they have learned about the panda’s habitat, diet, and conservation efforts. Students have also practiced saying and recognising key vocabulary, such as:

  • 熊猫 (Xióngmāo) – Panda

Hands-on activities such as drawing pandas and creating paper panda crafts have helped reinforce their learning in a fun and engaging way.

Senior Students: The Meaning of 福 (Fú)

Our senior students have been exploring the significance of the Chinese character 福 (Fú), which symbolises good fortune, blessings, and happiness. This character is commonly seen during Chinese New Year, often displayed upside down to signify that good luck has arrived.

Students have been practicing writing the character 福 using traditional brush strokes and have learned about its cultural significance in Chinese homes and celebrations. To further immerse themselves in the topic, students have engaged in activities such as:

  • Designing their own 福 character decorations on their red envelope
  • Creating a class display of their artistic interpretations of 福

We are so proud of our students’ dedication to learning Chinese culture. Their curiosity and creativity continue to shine through in every lesson!
