Year 9 & 10 Our World
Poverty & Power Specialism
During the first few weeks of this term, our Year 9 & 10 Poverty and Power class watched and studied a documentary about the harsh reality of how more than 600 million people around the world live in extreme poverty. This documentary specifically focused on the lives of those in Guatemala, living on a dollar a day, many who live without access to food, clean water, healthcare, education and other opportunities and resources.
In one of our latest sessions, we became a microfinance leader through an organisation called ‘Kiva’ where people all around the world are able to loan small amounts of money to entrepreneurs around the world (that may eventually come back to the lender), that can make a difference to their communities living in poverty.
Our class decided to lend to a family called the Musubao Group in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who are purchasing equipment to provide purified water to their community, and make clean drinking water more accessible.

Even only lending a small amount of money to these entrepreneurs can make a huge difference, and our class eagerly waits to see if our loan will be brought back to us after the Musubao group grows.
If you want to help make a small loan, go to https://www.kiva.org to significantly impact those living under the poverty line and make a difference.
