French Model United Nations 

On Friday 17 July, four VCE French students from Northcote High School: Illi Monahan, Max Petoe, Noah Anderson and Ruby Simkovic; represented the Republic of Estonia at the United Nations Association of Australia (Victorian Division) French Model United Nations. This year's conference focused on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights. 

How the Day Ran 

Students from schools across Victoria gathered at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership in North Melbourne for a day of formal UN-style debate. Delegates followed official parliamentary procedure, using country placards to request the floor and addressing the Secretary-General and fellow delegates throughout the session. 

The conference began with each country's opening statement, outlining its national perspective on artificial intelligence and human rights. Representing Estonia, our team advocated for responsible AI innovation while emphasising the protection of human rights, reflecting Estonia's leadership in digital technology and its commitment to international human rights principles. 

The majority of the day was spent in moderated and unmoderated caucuses, where delegates debated a draft resolution clause by clause. Teams proposed amendments, negotiated with other countries, and worked to build support for their positions through formal debate and collaboration. 

The conference concluded with final speeches and votes on each proposed amendment before delegates cast their votes in favour, against, or abstaining to determine the final resolution.
