Christmas: A Mission, Not Just a Moment
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." - John 3:16-17
As we approach Christmas, it's easy to get caught up in the beautiful moments: the carols, the decorations, the gatherings with family and friends. These moments are precious, but the first Christmas was so much more than a moment in time. It was the beginning of a mission that continues to transform the world today.
When God sent Jesus into the world that first Christmas, He wasn't simply creating a special occasion to celebrate once a year. He was launching a rescue mission for all humanity. The shepherds who heard the angel's announcement didn't just witness a sweet scene in a stable; they encountered the beginning of God's plan to save the world from sin and death.
John 3:16-17 reminds us that Christmas was never meant to be confined to December 25th. God's love didn't arrive for a season and then depart. Instead, Jesus came to live among us, to show us the Father's heart, and ultimately to give His life so that we could have eternal life. This wasn't a temporary visit—it was a permanent intervention.
The mission of Christmas calls us to action. Just as God sent His Son into the world, Jesus sends us out to share His love with others. We become part of the ongoing Christmas mission when we show kindness to those who are hurting, when we stand up for justice, when we share the good news of Jesus with our friends and neighbors, and when we live lives that reflect God's transforming love.
This Christmas season, let's remember that we're not just celebrating an event from 2,000 years ago. We're participating in God's continuing mission to bring hope, healing, and salvation to our world. The question isn't just "How will you celebrate Christmas?" but "How will you live out the mission of Christmas every day?"
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for coming into our world on a mission of love and salvation. Help us to see Christmas not just as a moment to enjoy, but as a mission to join. Use us to share Your love with everyone we meet. Amen.
Blessings!
