Year 3 News

Reading
In week 6, Year 3 students built reading fluency by practising aloud in partners using engaging texts at their level. They learned to read with expression and proper pacing, including minding punctuation such as full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks.
In week 7, students learned to summarise fiction texts by identifying key story elements, such as characters, setting, and the beginning, middle and end of a story. They created flap-books that contained each of these elements from coloured paper.
“It really helped me get better with reading” - Ekam 3B
“Making the flapbook made me realise how easy writing a story for myself could be” - Ryan 3B
Writing
This fortnight in Writing, Year 3 students have been working hard on publishing their explanation texts about animal life cycles. They explored a range of formats, including PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and colourful one-page displays, showcasing both their learning and creativity.
In Week 7, students continued their Writing journey by beginning to learn about spoken texts. They explored the key features of spoken presentations, reflected on the text types they have learned this year, and started planning the text they will create and present. As part of this learning, students were introduced to using cue cards effectively, understanding that these should include simple dot points, key words, or short phrases to support confident delivery.
“I chose a persuasive spoken text because I want to persuade people that ordinary clothes should be allowed.” - Deepti 3C
“I chose an information text so people can learn about my country, Sri Lanka.” -Taveesh 3C
Maths
In Week 6, Year 3 students had fun exploring three dimensional objects. They examined a range of objects from their everyday environment and worked together to identify each shape’s faces, edges and vertices. As they compared different shapes, they began to understand how these features help define and distinguish one shape from another.
“A vertex is the corner of a 3D shape.” - William 3A
“A triangular prism has 5 faces, 9 edges and 6 vertices.” - Shiloh 3A
In Week 7, Year 3 students shifted their focus to angles. They learned to recognise right, acute and obtuse angles in their environment and had plenty of opportunities to spot them in everyday classroom items, from books and tables to door frames and even their own bodies during movement activities!
Inquiry
This fortnight in Inquiry, Year 3 students have been exploring groups in our school and local community and how people contribute to them. They have learned to identify different groups, understand the roles people play, and recognise how communities work together.
Students have also focused on volunteering, learning what it means to volunteer, sharing examples of when they have helped others, and exploring the benefits of giving their time. They have started planning a one-week volunteering program at CPS, developing ideas for how small acts of help and kindness can make a positive difference in their school and local community.
“I volunteered to collect the items for my grandma because I want to help.” -Taylan 3C
“WIRES helps wildlife animals.” -Leo 3C
Social and Emotional Learning
In Social and Emotional Learning, Year 3 students learned a new problem-solving technique called ‘Problem Roundabout.’ This technique can be used to help them slow down and think through their choices before acting. Year 3 students practised identifying a problem, considering the different
‘exits’ or options available and then weighing up which choice would lead to the best outcome. Through discussions and real-life scenarios, students discovered that taking a moment to reflect can make problem-solving much easier and less stressful.
“We have been learning about choices we can make if someone annoys us or hurts us.” - Kayan 3A
“It was quite calm and relaxing to do this activity.” - Anshmeet 3A
“It was calming and fun to do.” - Isabelle 3A
Special Event
In week 7, Year 3 students learned important road safety skills through an engaging program delivered by the RACV! They explored how to safely cross and walk along roads by looking, listening, and thinking before acting. Students worked in groups to think of the best way to behave in a scenario given to them by our incursion leader, Liz. By the end of the sessions, they felt more confident about keeping themselves safe when travelling in their community.
